Les personnages de roman se débattent avec leurs problèmes. Ils cherchent, luttent, construisent, inventent. Ils enquêtent, comme le diraient John Dewey ou Conan Doyle, en s'efforçant de maintenir le problème à l'extérieur d'eux-mêmes. Mais ils sortent rarement indemnes de leurs aventures. D'où l'appel à un deuxième modèle, celui du sens (Lewis Carroll, Gilles Deleuze) pour rendre compte des changements qui affectent leur rapport au réel, aux valeurs, à autrui et à eux-mêmes. L'ouvrage analyse des romans d'auteurs classiques ou contemporains (Umberto Eco, Daniel Defoe, Gustave Flaubert, Michel Houellebecq, Franz Kafka, Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, Michel Tournier, Jules Verne). Die ästhetische Präsenz von Schrift ist nie rein dekorativ. Sie bietet einen Zugang zu ihrer inneren Organisation. Unser Blick wird früh darin geschult, die Spatien beim Lesen auszublenden und als neutralen Hintergrund ohne Bedeutung für den Sinn des Textes zu sehen. Zwischenräume beim Druck sind aber keineswegs leer. Letter und Lücke sind keine Gegensätze, sondern ineinander verzahnte, sich komplementär ergänzende Körper, die den Text als ein geometrisches Raster präsentieren. Von Lettern und Lücken betrachtet die Ordnung der Schrift im Bleisatz aus literaturwissenschaftlicher Sicht. Dabei werden literarische Drucktexte mit auffälligen typographischen und semantischen Lücken vorgestellt und von der anderen Seite des Schwarz-Weiß-Kippbildes her neu gelesen und neu gesehen.
