Abstract

In Genetic Dilemmas and the Child's Right to an Open Future, Davis examines perplexing medical cases as a means to discussion of ethical dilemmas raised by the availability of new reproductive technologies. Her discussion covers genetic ethics, as well as the ethics of parenthood. The author advances an ethical theory that can guide health care professionals, policy makers and parents when the rights and interests of parents collide with those of their "potential children" or children. Davis addresses four ethical issues in genetics in Genetic Dilemmas including disabled parents who seek assistance in conceiving a child who shares their disability; genetic testing of children with no immediate medical benefit; sex selection and determination of fetal sex; and the cloning of human beings. Abstract

This wide ranging and compelling account surveys the exciting opportunities and difficult problems which arise from the new human genetics. The availability of increasingly sophisticated information on our genetic make-up presents individuals, and society as a whole, with difficult decisions. Although it is hoped that these advances will ultimately lead the way to the effective treatment and screening for all diseases with a genetic component, at present many individuals are 'condemned' to a life sentence, in the knowledge that they, or their children, will suffer from an incurable genetic disease. This is the first book to attempt to explore and survey these issues from such a variety of perspectives: from personal accounts of individuals coping with the threat of genetic disease, from the viewpoint of clinicians and scientists, and from those concerned with psychosocial, legal and ethical aspects.

Abstract

In contemporary ethical discussion widespread concern about the potential risks of genetic engineering is raising new and fundamental questions about our responsibilities towards unborn generations. Newly acquired knowledge in genetic engineering techniques has brought about not only potential benefits but also immense risks for the well-being of both present and future generations. This book raises a number of ethical issues concerning the impact of genetic engineering on generations yet to be born. The four topical areas that constitute the focus of the volume, namely (1) from laboratory to germ-line therapy, (2) the concept of human nature: theological and secular perspectives, (3) genetic intervention and the common heritage view, and (4) social responsibilities of geneticists towards future generations, raise intriguing ethical and legal questions, as well as important policy issues. As much as any set of issues, they reflect the hopes and fears, prejudices and uncertainties that people associate with germ-line intervention and the future of human kind. Raises a number of ethical issues concerning the impact of genetic engineering on generations yet to be born. This volume focuses on the concept of human nature: theological and secular perspectives, genetic intervention and the common heritage view, and social responsibilities of geneticists towards future generations.
