This Handbook is the first systematic effort to map the fast-growing phenomenon of memory activism and to delineate a new field of research that lies at the intersection of memory and social movement studies. From Charlottesville to Cape Town, from Santiago to Sydney, we have recently witnessed protesters demanding that symbols of racist or colonial pasts be dismantled and that we talk about histories that have long been silenced. But such events are only the most visible instances of grassroots efforts to influence the meaning of the past in the present. Made up of more than 80 chapters that encapsulate the rich diversity of scholarship and practice of memory activism by assembling different disciplinary traditions, methodological approaches, and empirical evidence from across the globe, this Handbook establishes important questions and their theoretical implications arising from the social, political, and economic reality of memory activism. Memory activism is multifaceted, takes place in a variety of settings, and has diverse outcomes – but it is always crucial to understanding the constitution and transformation of our societies, past and present. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes sind der Frage gewidmet, welche Rolle verschiedene literarische Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergangenheit zur Konstruktion, Bewahrung und Modifikation von Gruppenidentitäten spielen können. Das bedeutet, dass der Identitätsbegriff, der den Beiträgen dieses Bandes zu Grunde liegt, auf flexible Praktiken zielt, nicht aber auf Essentialismen einer überzeitlich gedachten Gruppenexistenz. Denn dass es auf der Ebene historischer Denkformen, Repräsentationen, ja ganzer kultureller Imaginarien geschichtsmächtig wirksame Vorstellungen von Zugehörigkeit und Alterität gibt, ist unbestritten. How does intangible heritage affect the notion of patrimonialization? Is the patrimonial recognition of local specificities compatible with a global context of homogenization? How to build distant knowledge about a conflicting and recent memory? Are documentary and digital mediations limited to a role of conservation or illustration of heritage? Would they not guarantee the continuity of the social memory of missing assets and the renewal of society's heritage practices?The work addresses these issues through a tension between memory and heritage. This point of view is shared by the French and Brazilian researchers who came together to make visible a field of research that is transversal to them and for which the heritage novelty lies in renewing the concept of constituting heritage through the place given to memory.

Em Memória Social em Campo Maior procurou-se, antes de mais, perceber e discutir algumas das especificidades decorrentes da localização fronteiriça da vila estudada, nomeadamente as que são reflectidas na produção e reprodução daquilo a que podemos chamar memória social. Em articulação com as categorias de espaço e de tempo, a memória social, entendida enquanto representação partilhada do passado e configuração do presente, constituiu-se, portanto, como o foco analítico principal que estruturou o trabalho. Na persecução dos objectivos definidos, foram configurados dois eixos de análise fundamentais. Por um lado a própria fronteira como objecto de inquirção, ou seja, como factor que singularizou a comunidade, quer quando funcionou como recurso, quer quando potenciou o conflito. Por outro lado, a memória social como elemento articulador de diferentes temporalidades e experiências de vida, ou seja, como recurso narrativo capaz de estruturar vivencias e dar-lhes sentido.
