Parmi les jeunes cinéastes espagnols qui se sont affirmés au cours de la dernière décennie, Julio Medem est apparu comme l’un des plus originaux tant par le caractère poétique et insolite de ses récits que par ses recherches plastiques. Cependant, Medem n’est pas uniquement espagnol, il est aussi basque, et son cinéma porte les traces plus ou moins manifestes des traditions et mythes basques qu’il revitalise dans ses différentes productions. Les chercheurs français et espagnols ici réunis se sont proposés d’interroger et d’éclairer son œuvre – cinq long-métrages de fiction et un documentaire – à partir d’une démarche analytique qui associe étude textuelle et histoire culturelle.
