The use of modules - modular co-ordination - in design and design realization is not a new concept. However, it is only now that a full realization of its importance has come about. Few will deny that, to become the rule rather than the exception, any concept should be explained as simply as possible.A module in the context of building design and construction is nothing more than a rational unit of size. The dimensions of the building and all its components will be founded on multiples of this basic unit. Modular co-ordination is the application of such a unit throughout the design and construction processes. In countries already committed to working in metric, it is essential that the module have a metric basis. Elsewhere, the principles of modula, or dimensional, co-ordination remain the same, whatever the units of measurement.
