Fin février 1789, Gouverneur Morris débarque à Paris avec pour mission officieuse de négocier la dette de la Jeune Nation américaine envers la France. Il plonge dans une capitale qui connaît les premiers soubresauts d’une Révolution qui gronde. Ce Père Fondateur, auteur du texte de la Constitution américaine, entame alors la rédaction d’un journal qu’il tiendra sans interruption jusqu’à la mort de Louis XVI, en janvier 1793. Il fréquente les salons et les clubs où se discute et se décide le sort de la France et celui de la famille régnante. Il se mesure aux plus hauts personnages du temps : Necker, La Fayette, Talleyrand (avec qui il partage sa maîtresse madame de Flahaut), Mirabeau, Jefferson, Lavoisier… Ce premier volume, qui couvre l’année 1789, fourmille d’anecdotes personnelles qui se mêlent aux analyses politiques sur les événements cruciaux de la période. En cela, le journal constitue une source exceptionnelle pour l’historien de la Révolution française et pour le spécialiste des révolutions atlantiques.
