This book presents theoretical, critical and analytical reflections on key topics of contemporary music including acoustic, electroacoustic and digital music, and audiovisual and multimedia composition. Six essays by Paolo Paulo C. Chagas approach music from different perspectives such as philosophy, sociology, cybernetics, musical semiotics, media, and critical studies. Chagas’ s practical experience, both as a composer of contemporary music and sound director of the Electronic Music Studio of Cologne, nourishes his observations on the specific creativity that emerges with the use of the technical apparatus, the development of the electronic music studio, the different aesthetics of electroacoustic music, and the forms of audiovisual and multimedia composition.0The title is a reference to Wittgenstein, who suggested that sound is only the surface of music and that the musical work conceals something more profound that can hardly be described by philosophical models or scientific theories.

Twintig jaar na de definitieve split van The Police bracht eind 2006 de toen 54-jarige Britse frontman van de legendarische rockgroep Sting een album uit met liedjes die 400 jaar oud zijn, van de componist John Dowland. Bij die gelegenheid verklaarde Sting de dood van de rockmuziek in de volgende bewoordingen : "De werkelijkheid is dat rock op sterven ligt. We hebben onszelf veel te lang wijsgemaakt dat rockmuziek revolutionair is. Vergeet het. Rock is reactionair".Het belette Sting niet te gaan dansen op het graf van de rockmuziek. De herenigde Police startte het jaar daarop een wereldtournee, de lucratiefste van het jaar 2007. Dergelijke contradicties zijn nu eenmaal eigen aan de cultuurwereld en aan de muziekwereld in het bijzonder. Nochtans wordt in het rockwereldje een puristische ideologie gehanteerd die vruchtbare contradicties uitsluit. Het is de ideologie van het rockisme, dat rockmuziek tot norm stelt, dat rockmuziek tot de enige rebelse, tegenculturele en maatschappelijk relevante muziek proclameert, dat daarvoor de culturele strijd aanbindt met andere muziekgenres die als minderwaardig verworpen worden, dat beweert dat echte rockmuziek boven de commercie, de muziekindustrie staat (en recentelijk ook illegale downloads goedpraat), dat rockmuziek als de enige creatieve en authentieke muziek voorstelt en dus niet aan marketing en imagebuilding van de platenfirmamaffia onderworpen zou zijn, dat de fans - of liever: de community - van rockmuziek verenigt in een rock-'n-roll-lifestyle...
