A range of disciplines have described different access points to authenticity, but until now, there has been no empirical, discourse-linguistic investigation of authenticity. Personal authenticity is always linked to its social and situational performance but is manifested first and foremost in the attribution of authenticity. This study presents a systematic analytic model of the discursive creation of (non-)authenticity in the public sphere. Der Begriff der Authentizität bewegt sich zwischen Hochwertwort und ethischem Ideal der Postmoderne. In ihm verdichtet sich die anthropologische Frage nach dem Selbstsein, zugleich kommen ihm Diskursfunktionen der Autorisierung, Vermarktung oder Letztbegründung zu.Während diverse geistes-, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Disziplinen unterschiedliche Zugänge zu Authentizität aufzeigen, blieb eine empirisch-diskurslinguistisch angelegte Untersuchung aus. Die vorliegende Studie versteht Authentizität gleichermaßen als Performativitäts- und Diskursphänomen und konzentriert sich in der Analyse auf Zuschreibungspraktiken. Dadurch schlägt sie die Brücke von diskursiver zu erlebter Authentizität: Die Herstellung personaler Authentizität ist stets an ihre soziale und situative Performanz gebunden. Was aber öffentlich-medial als authentisch erlebt (vermittelt) wird, ist erst in sprachlichen Zuschreibungen von Authentizität greifbar. Über die Analyse bestehender Narrative des (Nicht-)Authentischen werden Prozess und Konstituenten diskursiver Authentifizierzungen ermittelt und systematisiert. Mit diesem Modell lässt sich beschreiben, weshalb ein Akteur X einem Akteur Y innerhalb eines Bezugsrahmens Z Authentizität zuschreibt oder aberkennt.

„The Past through Narratology“ proposes a fresh approach to various types of texts from Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Starting from a broad definition of what a text can be – ranging from hagiographic narratives and maps to archaeological remains – this book proposes narrativity and narratology as frameworks for exploring sources and exchanging opinions. The various contributions in this volume investigate how late antique and early medieval authors and movements used narrative as a vehicle for their ideas and how they operated in literarised spaces. At the same time, this book also examines how we as researchers construct narratives about our periods of study. „The Past through Narratology“ bietet neue Ansätze zur Interpretation spätantiker und frühmittelalterlicher Texte. Ausgehend von einer weit gefassten Definition dessen, was ein Text sein kann – von hagiographischen Erzählungen über Karten bis hin zu archäologischen Überresten –, schlägt dieses Buch Narrativität und Narratologie als Deutungsrahmen für die Erforschung von Quellen und den wissenschaftlichen Austausch neuer Ideen vor. In den hier versammelten Beiträgen wird untersucht, wie Autoren und literarische Bewegungen Sinnzusammenhänge in Erzählform brachten und sie in literarisierten Räumen positionierten. Gleichzeitig stellen sie die Frage, wie wir als Forscher Narrative über unsere Vergangenheit konstruieren.

In The Gatekeeper: Narrative Voice in Plato’s Dialogues Margalit Finkelberg offers the first narratological analysis of all of Plato’s transmitted dialogues. The book explores the dialogues as works of literary fiction, giving special emphasis to such topics as narrative levels, focalization, narrative frame, and metalepsis. The main conclusion of the book is that in Plato the plurality of the speakers’ opinions is not accompanied by a plurality of points of view. Only one perspective is available, that of the narrator. Contrary to the widespread view, Plato’s dialogues cannot be considered multivocal, or “dialogic” in Bakhtin’s sense. By skillful use of narrative voice, Plato unobtrusively regulates the readers’ reception and response. The narrator is the dialogue’s gatekeeper, a filter whose main function is to control how the dialogue is received by the reader by sustaining a certain perspective of it.
