In 1945, soon after liberation, Soviet authorities in control of the Kattowitz (Katowice) camp in Poland asked Primo Levi and his fellow captive Leonardo De Benedetti to compile a detailed report on the sanitary conditions in Auschwitz. The result was an extraordinary testimony and one of the first accounts of the extermination camps ever written. The Report on the Monowitz Camp, published in a medical journal in 1946, marked the beginnings of Levi s lifelong work as writer, analyst and witness. In the subsequent four decades, Levi never ceased to recount his experiences in Auschwitz in a wide variety of texts, many of which are assembled together here for the first time, alongside other testimony from De Benedetti. Der Pfarrer Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) ist als Mitbegründer der Bekennenden Kirche und durch seine Reden zur Schuld der Deutschen nach 1945 bekannt. Dabei war er als Student in völkischen und antisemitischen Parteien und Verbänden aktiv und begrüßte 1933 die NS-Machtergreifung. Auch nach 1945 trat seine Judenfeindschaft wiederholt hervor. Benjamin Ziemann rekonstruiert die Biographie eines streitbaren Kirchenpolitikers und Nationalisten, der die Weimarer Republik ebenso ablehnte wie Adenauers Politik der Westbindung und den Parteienstaat der Bundesrepublik. Nach 1945 wurde Niemöller zum Pazifisten – und blieb doch dem Habitus des kaiserlichen Marineoffiziers treu. In diesem Leben voller dramatischer Momente, Widersprüche und persönlicher Krisen werden die Umbrüche und Kontinuitäten der deutschen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert anschaulich.

Grâce à une approche topographique, La Musique dans les camps nazis entend faire découvrir les multiples usages de la musique dans le système concentrationnaire, en se fondant sur des témoignages écrits, des dessins réalisés par des détenu·e·s ou des survivant·e·s, des partitions et des objets liés aux orchestres, ainsi que sur des photographies officielles ou clandestines. Si la musique a servi avant tout au fonctionnement des politiques d'anéantissement dans les camps, elle a parfois pu contribuer à mettre en échec certains aspects du système en permettant, même furtivement, la constitution de communautés dans une humanité retrouvée
