Abstract

This contributed volume, “Multifaceted Protocols in Biotechnology, Volume 2”, consists of multidisciplinary methods and techniques commonly used in biotechnology studies. There are two sections covered in this book – Ionic Liquid Related Techniques & Evergreen Biotechnology Techniques. A brief introduction supports each protocol to allow easy learning and implementation. The first section consists of three chapters covering studies in modern biotechnology focusing on the role of ionic liquid techniques in extracting secondary metabolites, enzyme stabilization and biomass processing. The second section covers evergreen methodologies. It comprises five chapters covering topics on microcarrier technology for cell culture; Polymerase Chain Reaction for non-halal sources detection in food; ELISA for biomarker identification; gamma ray-induced mutagenesis for enhancing microbial fuel cells; and the effect of temperature on antibacterial activity of Carica papaya seed extract. This book will be useful to graduate students, researchers, academics, and industry practitioners working in the area of biotechnology.

Abstract

Saliva as a unique sample for health assessment is gaining attention among researchers of different fields in the last 20 years; being reflected in an impressive increase in the number of papers published studying saliva from different biological aspects in human and veterinary species. Once deemed merely a digestive juice is now considered a biological fluid capable of communicating information about physiopathological processes occurring in organisms, since saliva has been shown to contain molecular and bacterial compounds that can change in response to local and systemic pathologies. Furthermore, the interest of saliva as a diagnostic, prognostic and monitoring biofluid is forced by its non-invasive nature being of easy and inexpensive sampling, involving only minimal discomfort and allowing the collection of multiple/repeated specimens at anytime, anywhere and without need for specialized staff. In this contributed volume, the authors bring together, summarize and reflect the generated knowledge about saliva as a source of biomarkers for health and welfare evaluation in humans and animal models. This volume also highlights the importance of confounding factors, such as sampling methods, flow, total protein content, contamination, or storage. This book will serve as a manual for graduates, practitioners and researchers by providing general ideas about the possibilities and utilities of saliva in clinical practice or investigation, and indicating the main cautions each should have in mind before saliva usage.

Abstract

This book highlights both conventional and nanomaterials-based biosensors for the detection of cervical cancers. It describes developments in the selective and sensitive electrochemical biosensors based on DNA for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer. Further, this book covers other nano-biosensing systems such as nano-thermometry-based sensing platforms, mechanical sensing platforms encompassing piezoelectric-based sensors, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy based on PEGylated arginine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles, and field-effect transistor-based platforms for the early detection of cervical cancer. Also, it presents conventional platforms such as vibrational spectroscopy and polymerase chain reaction techniques for the diagnosis of cervical cancer. Finally, it reviews currently available biomarkers for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer and presents strategies for developing novel biomarkers based on cellular and molecular approaches. As such, this book is a comprehensive resource for researchers and clinicians working in cervical cancer diagnostics.
