Abstract

This special volume provides twelve contributions that discuss different aspects of social and endocrine behaviors with an emphasis on the neural regulation of these behaviors. In addition, several review chapters address the neural plasticity that results from exposure to hormones or the experiences with the behavior. Finally, each of the contributions emphasizes future directions and incorporation of newly developed neuroscience techniques and approaches.

Abstract

Sin, Science, and the Sex Police contains twenty-nine selections covering both the study of sex (sexology) and the ideology of sex (sexosophy) in which Money, the man who coined the terms "gender" and "lovemap," ponders the many dimensions of human sexuality: its biology, the natural coding of sex assignments, how we identify ourselves sexually, the sex roles we play, and more. Abstract

Recently, an interest in our understanding of well-being within the context of competition and cooperation has re-emerged within the biological and neural sciences. Given that we are social animals, our well-being is tightly linked to interactions with others. Pro-social behavior establishes and sustains human contact, contributing to well-being. Adaptation and Well-Being is about the evolution and biological importance of social contact. Social sensibility is an essential feature of our central nervous systems, and what have evolved are elaborate behavioral ways in which to sustain and maintain the physiological and endocrine systems that underlie behavioral adaptations. Writing for his fellow academics, and with chapters on evolutionary aspects, chemical messengers and social neuroendocrinology among others, Jay Schulkin explores this fascinating field of behavioral neuroscience.

Abstract

How important are biological factors, such as hormones, in shaping our sexual destinies? This book brings a social development, as well as a biological and clinical psychological perspective to bear on the factors that shape our development as male or female, and that cause individuals within each sex to differ from one another in sex-related behaviors. Topics covered include sexual orientation, childhood play, spatial, mathematical and verbal abilities, nurturance, aggression, dominance, handedness, brain structure, and gender identity (transexualism).
