Jean Paul eröffnet mit einer Traumvision Die Rede des toten Christus... Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts die Phase nihilistischer Gedankenexperimente, die in vielen Werken der Romantik (L. Tiecks William Lovell - 1795; C. Brentanos Godwi - 1801; Jean Pauls Titan - 1803; Nachtwachen des Bonaventura - 1805; E.T.A. Hoffmanns Elixiere des Teufels - 1815) fortgesetzt wurden, bis hin zur Infragestellung Gottes in Georg Büchners Lenz und zur Ersetzung Gottes durch das Nichts in Büchners Dantons Tod (1835). Damit wird beabsichtigt, nihilistische Gedanken in ihrem Einfluss auf die Auffassung Gottes, der Welt (u. a. die Rolle der Phantasie, des Idealismus, des Schicksals; Werte und Prioritäten) und des Menschen (u. a. Identitätsproblem, Gefühlsleere, Nichtigkeit, Langeweile, Außenseitertum) als einen kontinuierlichen Prozess zu erfassen. Der Untersuchung literarischer Werke geht eine theoretische Analyse des Begriffes «Nihilismus» um die Jahrhundertwende vom 18. auf das 19. Jahrhundert voran.
