Abstract

This edited volume of fourteen specially commissioned essays written from a variety of critical perspectives by leading cervantine scholars seeks to provide an overview of Cervantes's 'Novelas ejemplares' which will be of interest to a broad academic readership. An extensive general Introduction places the Novelas in the context of Cervantes's life and work; provides basic information about their content, composition, internal ordering, publication, and critical reception, gives detailed consideration to the contemporary literary-theoretical issues implicit in the title, and outlines and contributes to the key critical debates on their variety, unity, exemplarity, and supposed 'hidden mystery'. After a series of chapters on the individual stories, the volume concludes with two survey essays devoted, respectively, to the understanding of eutrapelia implicit in the Novelas, and to the dynamics of the character pairing that is one of their salient features. Detailed plot summaries of each of the stories, and a Guide to Further Reading are supplied as appendices.

Abstract

Vor dem Hintergrund der Diskussion über die krisenhafte Raumerfahrung der Frühen Neuzeit untersucht die Autorin die Präsentation von Wahrnehmung und Perspektive in den Novellen von Cervantes (1547-1616). Der Vergleich mit Textbeispielen aus anderen spanischen Novellensammlungen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts (Timoneda, Lope de Vega, Céspedes y Meneses, María de Zayas) enthüllt dabei eindrücklich bislang vernachlässigte Charakteristika des cervantinischen Schreibens. Die Verfasserin diskutiert den häufig unscharf verwendeten Begriff der Perspektive kritisch und untersucht die Darstellung der Wahrnehmungsperspektiven als syntagmatischen literarischen Ausdruck des Paradigmas der Perspektive. Im Mittelpunkt stehen erstmals die räumliche Perspektivierung der Wahrnehmung und der konkrete Wahrnehmungsakt. Es gelingt der Autorin, die bis heute "geheimnisvolle Perspektivenwirkung" (Hatzfeld), die auch Autoren wie Flaubert bei der Lektüre von Cervantes verblüffte, durchschaubar zu machen. Der Leser gewinnt einen vertieften Einblick in die teilweise neuartigen Erzählverfahren von Cervantes. In seinem Werk finden sich so Ansätze zu fokalisiertem Erzählen, in dem Krisensituationen und Orientierungskrisen der Figuren ihren Ausdruck finden. Offengelegt wird damit ein erkenntnistheoretisches Problem, das auf die Moderne verweist. Statt einer bloßen Opposition von engaño und desengaño, von Illusion und Desillusionierung, die der Barockliteratur immer wieder nachgesagt wurde, zeigt die Verfasseirn bei Cervantes eine differenzierte Darstellung des Wahrnehmungsaktes als Prozeß auf. Die synchrone und diachrone Perspektivierung der Wahrnehmung führt in den Novellen von Cervantes zu einem kontextualisierten und subjektbezogenen Wahrheits- und Erkenntniskonzept. Dieses befindet sich im Spannungsverhältnis zur 'gesteuerten Kultur' (Maravall) der spanischen Barockgesellschaft. Die Untersuchung bietet vielseitige Anregungen und neue Einsichten für eine Auseinandersetzung mit Cervantes, dem spanischen 'Goldenen Zeitalter' sowie der Novellistik und Erzähltheorie der Frühen Neuzeit und Moderne.

Abstract

European exploration and conquest expanded exponentially in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and as the horizons of imperial experience grew more distant, strategies designed to convey the act of witnessing came to be a key source of textual authority. From the relación to the captivity narrative, the Hispanic imperial project relied heavily on the first-person authority of genres whose authenticity undergirded the ideological armature of national consolidation, expansion, and conquest. At the same time, increasing pressures for religious conformity in Spain, as across Europe, required subjects to bare themselves before external authorities in intimate confessions of their faith. Emerging from this charged context, the unreliable voice of the pícaro poses a rhetorical challenge to the authority of the witness, destabilizing the possibility of trustworthy representation precisely because of his or her intimate involvement in the narrative. In Knowing Fictions, Barbara Fuchs seeks at once to rethink the category of the picaresque while firmly centering it once more in the early modern Hispanic world from which it emerged. Venturing beyond the traditional picaresque canon, Fuchs traces Mediterranean itineraries of diaspora, captivity, and imperial rivalry in a corpus of texts that employ picaresque conventions to contest narrative authority. By engaging the picaresque not just as a genre with more or less strictly defined boundaries, but as a set of literary strategies that interrogate the mechanisms of truth-telling itself, Fuchs shows how self-consciously fictional picaresque texts effectively encouraged readers to adopt a critical stance toward the truth claims implicit in the forms of authoritative discourse proliferating in Imperial Spain.

Abstract

Nearly as global in its ambition and sweep as its subject, Franco Moretti's The Novel is a watershed event in the understanding of the first truly planetary literary form. A translated selection from the epic five-volume Italian Il Romanzo (2001-2003), The Novel's two volumes are a unified multiauthored reference work, containing more than one hundred specially commissioned essays by leading contemporary critics from around the world. Providing the first international comparative reassessment of the novel, these essential volumes reveal the form in unprecedented depth and breadth--as a great cultural, social, and human phenomenon that stretches from the ancient Greeks to today, where modernity itself is unimaginable without the genre. By viewing the novel as much more than an aesthetic form, this landmark collection demonstrates how the genre has transformed human emotions and behavior, and the very perception of reality. Abstract

Animal Narratology interrogates what it means to narrate, to speak—speak for, on behalf of—and to voice, or represent life beyond the human, which is in itself as different as insects, bears, and dogs are from each other, and yet more, as individual as a single mouse, horse, or puma. The varied contributions to this interdisciplinary Special Issue highlight assumptions about the human perception of, attitude toward, and responsibility for the animals that are read and written about, thus demonstrating that just as “the animal” does not exist, neither does “the human”. In their zoopoetic focus, the analyses are aware that animal narratology ultimately always contains an approximation of an animal perspective in human terms and terminology, yet they make clear that what matters is how the animal is approximated and that there is an effort to approach and encounter the non-human in the first place. Many of the analyses come to the conclusion that literary animals give readers the opportunity to expand their own points of view both on themselves and others by adopting another’s perspective to the degree that such an endeavor is possible. Ultimately, the contributions call for a recognition of the many spaces, moments, and modes in which human lives are entangled with those of animals—one of which is located within the creative bounds of storytelling.
