Abstract

Abstract

Improved food, medicine, and living conditions, as well as declining fertility, have dramatically increased the average age of the population throughout the modern industrialized world. Despite the recent upsurge of scholarly interest in the lives of the elderly and the blossoming of historical demography, this older segment of the population has received little attention to date from historical demographers. "Aging in the pas", a landmark volume, signals the emergence of the historical demographic study of aging. Never before has such a distinguished group of scholars examined the history of growing old in Western societies. Following a masterly and comprehensive explication of the new field by Peter Laslett, leading authorities on family history and historical demography explore changes in the lifestyles and social roles of the elderly over the past three centuries. Focusing primarily on Europe and the United States, and taking into account cultural as well as historical differences, they offer fresh insights on a broad range of topics including living arrangements, widowhood, retirement, and mortality. In his concluding chapter, David Kertzer shows how focusing on the end of the life course alters accepted views of family processes. Groundbreaking and illuminating, "Aging in the pas" provides a much-needed historical perspective on the issues of older people and points the way for further historical demographic research on aging.
