With a title that refers to the manipulation and illusion that features in their photographs, the images of Swiss artists Onorato and Krebs also contain a healthy dosage of whimsical humor that helps them explore the American landscape and its peculiar details. Tricks of the eye, accidents of nature, spectacular views, and clever interventions flow through the pages of this image filled book. No text, only full and half-page colour and black and white photographs.

During a period of three years, Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs traveled several months through the United States, working “on the road” on the photo series The Great Unreal. The photographic work deals with reality and the fabrication of reality. The geography of America serves as both setting and fertile ground for the examination. Mysticism and demystification are important aspects in this process, as is working with a rich inventory of visual icons that can be continually deconstructed and manipulated. The working method of both photographers is based on interventions prescribed mostly by happenstance and change. Through repetition and associative placement, the sometimes crude, sometimes subtle interventions begin to link to one another, establishing an exciting transformation of reality that only hesitatingly reveals itself to the viewer. Together with book designers Megi Zumstein and Claudio Barandun, what emerged is an unmitigated picture book that makes a visual journey possible without any instructions. It comprises narrative image sequences that approximate the curiosity and restlessness of being on the move and, at the same time, depict associative connections with the American landscape.

Does the Bauhaus still contribute to further developments in photographic pictorial languages? What role does the avant-garde photography play for contemporary artists today? At the center of Bauhaus and Photography is the reconstruction of László Moholy-Nagy’s photography-section at the legendary 1929–1930 Werkbund-exhibition Film und Foto (Film and Photo). For the first time, the Neues Sehen (New Vision) of the 1930s as well as contemporary photographs, sculptures, and video installations enter into a seminal dialogue between the factual exhibition situation and virtual reality. Artists: László Moholy-Nagy, Erich Consemüller, Marianne Brandt, Lucia Moholy, Viviane Sassen, Dominique Teufen, Daniel T Braun, Wolfgang Tillmans, Doug Fogelson, Max de Esteban, Stefanie Seufert, Kris Scholz, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, Thomas Ruff, Antje Hanebeck, Douglas Gordon

This visual manifesto explores the notion of "the photographic", an analysis of the effects the technical image has on the visual culture as a whole. The glossy photo essay focuses on contemporary artistic practises and experimental approaches to photography, divided into four themes: The Photographic Fossil, Chemical Matter, Optical Confusion, and Performing the Image. The accompanying text insert engages a discourse among artists and intellectuals on defining photography and technique. "Off Camera" is the conclusion of a research project carried out by Belgian researcher Steven Humblet's group, Thinking Tools, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp.

The road trip is an enduring symbol in American culture. Ever since cars became widely available, the road stretching over the horizon has represented a sense of possibility and freedom, discovery and escapea place to get lost and find yourself in the process. The American road trip has appeared prominently in literature, music, and movies, but it has had an especially powerful influence on photography. As photographers have embarked on trips across the United States with the express purpose of making work, they have created some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium: from images by Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Berenice Abbott to Robert Franks seminal 1950s odyssey, The Americans. From Stephen Shore to Ryan McGinley, hundreds of other photographers have continued the tradition. The Open Road is the first book to explore the photographic road trip as a genre. It opens with a comprehensive introduction, which traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the early 1900s to present day. Each chapter explores one body of work in depth through informative texts and a portfolio of images, beginning with Robert Frank, and including such renowned work as Garry Winogrands 1964, Joel Sternfelds American Prospects, William Egglestons Los Alamos, and Alec Soths Sleeping by the Mississippi. The Open Road is a visual tour-de-force, presenting the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse.
