Le vieillissement marqué des communautés religieuses dans un Occident sécularisé pose la question de leur avenir. Qu’est-ce qui disparaît, mais aussi qu’est-ce qui perdure ? Y a-t-il un substrat qui traverse le temps ? La vie religieuse ne reprendra vraisemblablement pas la forme puissante et imposante qui a été la sienne à certaines périodes et notamment durant la première moitié du XXe siècle. C’est plutôt dans l’humilité et la pauvreté qu’elle se développera, comme cela a été le cas le plus souvent dans l’histoire. Elle devra aussi, comme au temps des fondations, repartir des besoins humains et spirituels de ses contemporains. Trois figures reconnues de l’Église du Québec, l’abbé Gilles Routhier, soeur Lorraine Caza et le frère Daniel Cadrin portent ici un regard serein, réaliste et plein d’espérance sur l’avenir.

An overview of medieval monasticism across a variety of European landscapes. Monasticism became part of Europe from the early period of Christianity on the continent and developed into a powerful institution that had an effect on the greater church, on wider society, and on the landscape. Monastic communities were as diverse as the societies in which they lived, following a variety of rules, building monasteries influenced by common ideals and yet diverse in their regionalism, and contributing to the economic and spiritual well-being inside and outside their precincts. This interdisciplinary volume presents the diversity of medieval European monasticism with a particular emphasis on its impact on its immediate environs. Geographically it covers from the far west in Ireland, Scotland and Wales through Scandinavia, south to the Iberian Peninsula, and onto the continent to the east in Romania. Drawing on archaeological, art and architectural, textual and topographical evidence, the contributors explore how monastic communities were formed, how they created a landscape of monasticism, how they wove their identities with those around them, and how they interacted with all levels of society to leave a lasting imprint on European towns and rural landscapes

Kassia the Nun offers a unique glimpse into ninth-century Byzantium as the only woman whose works were included in the corpus of liturgical hymns. This volume explores Kassia’s thought on Christology, on gender, and on monasticism itself. Kurt Sherry’s analysis provides readers with an opportunity to know this woman of remarkable intellect, wit, and piety by drawing primarily on her own words. He critically examines the most famous vignette of her life: a heated exchange of wits with the Emperor Theophilos, whereupon he married a rival. Sherry examines the way Kassia articulated the partisan theology of the iconophiles. Kassia’s is one of the only female voices from ninth-century Byzantium and this volume accordingly examines her reflections on gender in the context of her society and concludes that she represents a perspective that might be described as feminist. The last chapter evaluates Kassia’s philosophy of monasticism and puts her forward as a true "Mother of the Church". This volume also contains appendices helpful for both the scholar and layperson alike, including new English translations of certain relevant texts.

In 1220 Abbot William of Andres, a monastery halfway between Calais and Saint-Omer on the busy road from London to Paris, sat down to write an ambitious cartulary-chronicle for his monastery. Although his work was unfinished at his death, William's account is an unpolished gem of medieval historical writing. The Chronicle of Andres details the history of his monastery from its foundation in the late eleventh century through the early part of 1234. Early in the thirteenth century, the monks decided to sue for their freedom and appointed William as their protector. His travels took him on a 4000 km, four-year journey, during which he was befriended by Innocent III, among others, and where he learned to negotiate the labyrinthine system of the ecclesiastical courts. Upon winning his case, he was elected abbot on his return to Andres and enjoyed a flourishing career thereafter. A decade after his victory, William decided to put the history of the monastery on a firm footing. This text not only offers insight into the practice of medieval canon law (from the perspective of a well-informed man with legal training), but also ecclesiastical policies, the dynamics of life within a monastery, ethnicity and linguistic diversity, and rural life. It is comparable in its frankness to Jocelin of Brakelord's Chronicle of Bury. Because William drew on the historiographic tradition of the Southern Low Countries, his text also offers some insights into this subject, thus composing a broad picture of the medieval European monastic world.
