How did Christianity make its remarkable voyage from the Roman Mediterranean to the Indian subcontinent? By examining the social networks that connected the ancient and late antique Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, central Asia, and Iran, this book contemplates the social relations that made such movement possible. It also analyzes how the narrative tradition regarding the apostle Judas Thomas, which originated in Upper Mesopotamia and accredited him with evangelizing India, traveled among the social networks of an interconnected late antique world. In this way, the book probes how the Thomas narrative shaped Mediterranean Christian beliefs regarding co-religionists in central Asia and India, impacted local Christian cultures, took shape in a variety of languages, and experienced transformation as it traveled from the Mediterranean to India, and back again.

This is the second edition of a book published as long ago as 1962. The at that time relatively young Dr. A.F.J. Klijn was brought up in the school of W.C. van Unnik and G. Quispel, both in Utrecht. In his book about the Acts of Thomas he tried to demonstrate that this work cannot be reckoned among the Gnostic writings but belongs to the early Syriac or rather Eastern Christian tradition. In the last decades much has been written about Syriac Christianity, which made it necessary to rewrite the original introduction of this book. The commentary has mainly been left as it was, although many additions have been made to its great number of valuable references.

Are the Thomas references in the Gospel of John, the Thomas compositions, and the early Thomas traditions in northwestern and southern India purely legendary as biblical scholars have assumed or do they preserve unexamined historical traditions intermittently as the Thomas Christians in India have believed? Didymus Judas Thomas is one of the most misunderstood characters from the beginning of the New Testament history and interpretation. In this study, Thomaskutty addresses the following questions: whether Thomas was merely a `doubting Thomas' or a `genuine Thomas'? Can we understand Thomas comprehensively by bringing the New Testament, apocrypha, and historical traditions together? How was Thomas connected to eastern Christianity and how does the Thomas literature support/not support this connectivity? Can we understand the Thomas traditions related to Judea, Syria, and India with the help of canonical, extra canonical, and traditio-historical documents? Thomaskutty investigates the development of the Thomas literature right from the beginning, examining and questioning the approaches and methodologies that have been employed in interpreting these documents, and analyzes the Thomas literature closely in order to understand the character, his mission involvements, and the possible implications this may have for understanding early Christianity in the east.

"This book is the first modern collection of studies on the reception of the apostles and their companions in Late Antiquity, earlier Middle Ages and the Orthodox Churches. The volume opens with an exploration of the nature of the stories about the apostles in Late Antiquity, highlighting some of the questions and problems these stories tried to answer. Chapter 2 takes us to the Forum Romanum and the Apostle Peter, and the latter's antagonist Simon Magus appears again in the next chapter. The next five chapters focus on Paul and Thecla. The first two look at the relationship between the canonical Acts of the Apostles and the Acts of Paul by concentrating on spatial aspects as well as sex and intermarriage, respectively. Three chapters concentrate on Thecla and show that the Acts of Paul and Thecla and Thecla herself enjoyed a very high reputation, were seen as authoritative - if not canonical in certain circles - and a source of inspiration for later hagiographers. We see the apostle John at work in the fairly unfamiliar Acts of John by Prochorus and the Acts of Timothy, but also his connection with the church S. Giovanni a Porta Latina in Rome. The section on Thomas takes up the textual tradition of the Acts of Thomas with new manuscripts, and the reception of the Acts in the hagiography and liturgy of the Orthodox Churches. The last two chapters focus on Philip, whose Acts Acts shows that in fourth-century Hierapolis local paganism was still a factor to be taken into account and to be fought, but also that the treatise promoted ideals of civility and self-control, which were not that far removed from those in the Gospels. As has become usual, the volume ends with a detailed index."
