Actes d'une rencontre qui s'est tenue à Lyon dans le cadre du Colloque "Irénée entre Bible et hellénisme" (29.VI-2.VII 2014). Entre la littérature chrétienne de la première moitié du deuxième siècle de notre ère et l’oeuvre d’Irénée (dernier quart du deuxième siècle), un phénomène important intervient : l’apparition des livres du Nouveau Testament considérés en tant que tels et comme références de citations précises. En même temps, ces documents s’associent aux principaux corpus　– loi, prophètes, écrits sapientiaux et historiques　– de la Bible juive pour commencer à constituer ce qui deviendra la Bible chrétienne. Les chercheurs ayant contribué à ce volume réunissant une partie des apports du colloque Irénée entre Bible et hellénisme, qui s’est tenu à Lyon fin juin 2014, se sont penchés sur ce phénomène, en même temps qu’ils s’interrogeaient sur la réception et l’interprétation propres à Irénée de livres et de passages précis du corpus biblique en formation. Enfin, plusieurs contributions étudient la nature du texte biblique cité par Irénée, sur la base d’une étude fréquentielle globale due à L. Mellerin (Biblindex). Le recueil est complété par des index.

Ce volume rassemble des contributions autour de la figure d’Irénée de Lyon (vers 130-vers 200), auteur chrétien originaire d’Asie mineure, de langue et de culture grecques, qui a passé la seconde partie de sa vie « chez le Celtes », « dans les régions voisines du Rhône », pour reprendre ses propres expressions. Il est probable que la route d’Irénée de l’Orient vers l’Occident se soit trouvée coupée par une étape à Rome ; c’est pourquoi les études de ce volume sont regroupées en trois parties correspondant à ces trois zones géographiques – l’Asie, Rome, la Gaule – et à leurs contextes culturels respectifs. La perspective principale de ces travaux, dus à des chercheurs de diverses origines, est celle d’une approche historique générale, abordant divers aspects : la vie culturelle et littéraire en Asie, en particulier en Smyrne ; le plurilinguisme dans l’empire romain ; l’attrait de Rome pour les savants, philosophes et rhéteurs d’origine grecque ; l’expansion de Lyon au IIe siècle et l’épanouissement de sa vie économique et culturelle. D’autres contributions s’intéressent à la présence contemporaine de diverses composantes religieuses, en particulier aux traditions juives ainsi qu’aux vicissitudes et à l’organisation des premières communautés chrétiennes, avec une place faite aux groupements gnostiques. Les études sont précédées par une proposition de biographie d’Irénée, réalisée à nouveaux frais sur la base d’indications fournies par son œuvre.

Irenaeus of Lyons (c130-202) was the greatest theologian of the early post-apostolic church. In his writings we have access to the Christian teaching of a spiritual grandson of the apostle John, for Irenaeus’ instructor in the faith was himself taught by the apostle. Irenaeus stresses the importance of apostolic teaching and faithfully handing on the apostolic tradition. His presentation of the Christian faith deserves careful attention, since he knew exactly what he was talking about. There is no better avenue to the apostolic tradition in the early church than his writings.Irenaeus’ massive Against Heresies offers a winsome and compelling presentation of the Christian faith, but few have read this magnum opus since the first two of its five books focus on exposing and answering Gnostic heresies, and the only complete English version is difficult to read.This volume eliminates both these obstacles. James Payton has condensed Against Heresies by cutting out most of the interaction with the Gnostics, allowing Irenaeus’ rich presentation on the Christian faith to shine through. Furthermore, the author has refurbished the English prose to make it accessible to contemporary readers. In The Trinitarian Testimony of the Spirit , Kyle R. Hughes offers a new approach to the development of early Christian pneumatology by focusing on how Justin, Irenaeus, and Tertullian linked the Holy Spirit with testimony to the deity and lordship of the Father and the Son. Drawing extensively on recent studies of prosopological exegesis and divine testimony in the ancient world, Hughes demonstrates how these three pre-Nicene Christian writers utilized Scripture and the conventions of ancient rhetoric and exegesis to formulate a highly innovative approach to the Holy Spirit that would contribute to the identification of the Spirit as the third person of the Trinity.
