Intensive care voor kinderen is een jong specialisme binnen de kindergeneeskunde. Het specialisme richt zich op de behandeling van ernstig zieke kinderen: van ernstig zieke (voldragen) pasgeborenen tot adolescenten. In ons land zijn de intensive care-afdelingen voor kinderen exclusief verbonden aan de Universitair Medische Centra en jaarlijks worden bijna 5000 kinderen op deze afdelingen opgenomen. Het doel van de behandeling is niet alleen het verminderen van sterfte maar ook het behoud van kwaliteitvan leven en dus het voorkómen van restschade door ziekte en de meestal agressieve behandeling
