Abstract

For years Chile has been putting forward new modes of architectural production from a small, hitherto peripheral location in terms of traditional centres of contemporary production. Architects of the stature of Mathias Klotz, Smijan Radic and Cecilia Puga testify to a strong renewal of Chilean architecture, which has its prolongation in the younger couple formed by Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen. Established in the city of Concepicon, south of Santiago de Chile, the Pezo von Ellrichshausen studio made a name for itself in 2005 following the construction of the Poli House. Since then, and despite their youth, they have consolidated themselves as one of the most promising professional studios on the contemporary architecture scene. This issue brings together the studio s built works and projects, single-family houses for the most part, which permit the reader to witness the evolution of the themes dealt with from the compact, monolithic construction of the early dwellings, including interesting exercises in the use of courtyards, to the most recent theme of a rethink of the classic patio house.

Abstract

Introduced by an essay about the vague contradiction between intentionality and chance, necessity and accident, reason and futility, authorship and anonymity, the book presents a selection of images that inform Pezo von Ellrichshausen's cross production between art, architecture and academia. Each page contains a single picture and a brief caption describing it.Beyond a comprehensive depiction of the individual works, the monograph underlines transversal notions of inventory, format, scale, regulation and value within the pictorial representation. In the fashion of a personal album, each drawing, painting, photograph, model or building, evokes the mental world behind the couple's production. This volume could be read both as a collection of ideas, one after another, or as the same one that persists over time.

Abstract

Exterior' is an explicit counterpart to Pezo von Ellrichshausen's previous self-contained axonometric structures. In their large and immersive format, as both abstract and figurative compositions, these latest paintings are portraying the reversible quality of rather familiar architectonic spaces. The relative scale, rawness and depth depicted in these simple rooms can be read as carefully selected fragments taken from no particular building, from a pervasive and perhaps idealized laconic architecture. As an incomplete open reality, every picture is framing a discreet, quiet and typical encounter of walls, floors and ceilings; with a precise articulation of corners by means of a few basic architectural elements such as openings, steps, columns and beams. These are intimate and lively atmospheres that evoke an implicit memory of a well known place while conveying those oblique yet personal instants of attention in our everyday life. With an interview with Pezo von Ellrichshausen on the relation between their architecture and painting by the architect critic Ellis Woodman.

Abstract

Sofia von Ellrichshausen and Mauricio Pezo founded Pezo von Ellrichshausen in the southern Chilean city of Concepción in 2002. The two believe that architecture is a form of knowledge that provides “a tool to experience, read, and eventually understand the world in which we live.” They describe the sequence of design tools and methods that guide their work: “reading buildings by their ‘spatial structure’; replacing the notion of form by ‘format’; articulating rooms without interior; eroding the scale of things; doing austere buildings, hundreds of paintings, over and over again, ‘no more no less’.”For their Current Work lecture, Pezo and von Ellrichshausen will discuss several projects in Chile and beyond, including:Rode house in Chiloe Island, Chile, a curved, asymmetrical, unusual-shaped structure with a pitched roof built entirely of local timber.Vara Pavilion, a labyrinthine structure made of ten overlapping cylinders of different sizes built for the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale.Cien house, a monolithic concrete tower that serves as the duo’s house and studio in Concepción, Chile. Sofia von Ellrichshausen received a degree in architecture from the Universidad de Buenos Aires.Mauricio Pezo holds an MArch from the Universidad Catolica de Chile and an architecture degree from the Universidad del Bio-Bio. He has been awarded the Young Architect Prize by the Chilean Architects Association. The studio is a recipient of the Mies Crown Hall Americas Emerge Prize, the Rice Design Alliance Prize, the Iberoamerican Architecture Biennial Award, and the Chilean Architecture Award. Pezo and von Ellrichshausen were the curators of the Chilean Pavilion in the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale. A conversation with Michael Meredith will follow the lecture. Meredith is a principal of MOS, a New York-based architecture office, and an associate professor and director of graduate studies at Princeton University School of Architecture.

Abstract

Spatial Structure' is both a written and painted essay about the understanding of spatial relationships in architecture. In over a decade of constant academic and professional practice, as a parallel enquiry to the contemplation and production of buildings, this essay is rooted in a reciprocal motivation: the basic assumption that architecture is a form of knowledge. This double essay is an attempt to overtake the visual, technological, political or social practice in order to explore the very meaning of the most primary formal attributes of a room, even before that room is configured as such.
