Abstract

"The first publication presented to the English public under the title The Physiognomical System, contained several summary views of different branches of anthropology, which can be appreciated only after having been examined with great attention in all their details. Several chapters required more development, but the volume was already too large. I, therefore, after the second edition was sold, deemed it advisable to publish several chapters as separate works, and to give another arrangement to my English publications. In one volume, I gave an abstract of the anatomy of the brain, --in another, I treated of the deranged manifestations of the mind;--in a third, of the elementary principles of education, and I now publish two volumes on phrenology. In the first, I examine the physiological, and in the second the philosophical part of phrenology. Both these kinds of inquiries are inseparable from each other in the study of mental phenomena. We must first possess positive observations before we are allowed to reason but being acquainted with a sufficient number of facts, we may draw from them philosophical conclusions"--Preface. Abstract

"For whom is this book written? Here is my answer: First, for all who wish to make a scientific study of human nature, and especially for those who wish to become professional character analysts. Second, for teachers who, like myself, feel that they must know their students. Modern psychology has furnished valuable intelligence tests. Dr. Windsor's book turns the X-ray on all of the mind's activities-even more than that-on the whole man. Third, for the enlightenment of physicians and nurses. The medical world is fast learning that the patient must be studied above his eyes. The more the physician knows about the mind of his patient the better service he can render. Fourth, for clergymen who are teachers in a special field. Not infrequently the preacher's efficiency is in proportion to his knowledge of human nature. Henry Ward Beecher and Joseph Cook placed a high value on a practical knowledge of phrenology. Fifth, for lawyers. The most successful criminal lawyers testify to the necessity of knowing human nature. Dr. Windsor, educated for the law, has in his book made this point clear. Sixth, for the industrial world. Business organizers, business managers, salesmen, advertisers, etc., will find in this book the key to success. Seventh, for the general public. Dr. Windsor's simple style makes this book more attractive than a novel. The wealth of illustrations brings every page within the comprehension of the ordinary reader. Husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, should read and study this book. Knowing one another means harmony, co-operation, loyalty and love. Every reader, eager to obey the ancient injunction. "Know Thyself," will find in this book, the inspiration I found fifty years ago in Fowler's little book, "Memory"--Introduction. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract

"The aim of Phrenology is never to attempt pointing out what the mind is in itself, or its manner of acting, or its final destination. Phrenologists are observers of nature, and as such they examine only the manifestations of the mind and the circumstances under which these take place in this life. To prove Phrenology, a great mass of incontestable facts has been collected. This volume contains philosophical reflections, and inferences drawn from phrenological observations. It will be divided into eight sections. In the first I shall make remarks on various systems of mental philosophy: in the second I shall enumerate the fundamental powers of the mind which are ascertained by observation and admitted in Phrenology; state their aim, the disorders which may result from them, and the consequences of their inactivity: in the third, I shall discuss their origin: in the fourth, the conditions of their manifestations: in the fifth, the religious constitution of man: in the sixth, the moral constitution of man: in the seventh, I shall make some practical reflections: and, in the eighth, explain several philosophical expressions according to the fundamental powers of the mind"--Preface. Abstract

"The editor of the present volume has been induced to prepare it, from a belief that a selection of articles from the Edinburg Phrenological Journal and the Transactions of the Phrenological Society of Edinburg, would be an acceptable addition to the works on Phrenology already in the hands of the American public. The rapid progress which the science has made, within a few years, in Europe; the sanction of many of the most distinguished European Savans to its truth and importance; the strong advocacy lately given it in our own country in the medical profession; and the increased and growing interest with which the subject is generally viewed among us, recommend the present as a suitable moment for issuing such a volume. The conviction the editor entertains of the vast importance of the Phrenological discoveries, and of the beneficial results to be produced by a diffusion of a knowledge of them, has entered largely into his motive to undertake the task. In making the selections, those articles have been taken which contain evidence, derived directly from nature, of the truth of the phrenological positions. The editor thought that a collection of the most striking of the practical cases, reported in the Journal, would form a volume which would give satisfaction to the American Phrenologists, and at the same time, present the subject in a strong light to those who are not at all, or only partially, acquainted with the principles and pretensions of Phrenology. The means through which the discoveries were originally made, and then confirmed, viz: the observation of extreme cases in the manifestation of mental qualities and in the development of the brain, and the remarking, in all such cases, of the connexion between the mind and the brain;--this same means is the most efficient for teaching to others the truths thus discovered, and of producing an effectual impression of the reality and solidity of the basis on which the whole doctrine rests"--

Abstract

"The author's work on "The mental functions of the brain" has revived the interest in Gall's discoveries and led to many requests for a text-book of a scientific Phrenology, written in the light of modern research. In answer to this demand and in order to put a stop to the misrepresentations of some "professors" of the science, the author presents this volume of a theory of Phrenology in a very much modified and altered form. It will be seen that his system of brain segments has no connection with the bump-theory, which is commonly supposed to constitute Phrenology; and that the observations, on which the subject is based, are so simple that anyone can repeat them, and thus convince himself of their correctness, the more so as we are surrounded by material, in fact, cannot get away from it. To satisfy those who may still remain unconvinced, the author is perfectly willing to give a practical demonstration to any representative body desirous of such proof. Considering that the theories advanced by the author furnish a key to human character, enabling us to understand ourselves and to apply our knowledge to the education of the young, and to the successful treatment of the criminal and insane, it is to be hoped that those in authority and position will not rest until they have put beyond doubt the truth of these principles"--Preface. Abstract

The call for a third edition of this work is a proof that the public continues to take an interest in the subject of which it treats. In the Introduction to this edition, a full exposition is presented of the principles on which Phrenology is founded, written for the information of readers who may be. in doubt whether or not it is worthy of philosophical consideration. In other parts of the work, considerable additions have been made. Figures have been introduced to illustrate the forms of several of the heads described. These, although far from being sufficient to convey complete and correct notions of the objects represented, will be useful in giving more precision to the reader's conceptions, and may induce him to make observations in the great field of nature. It was my wish to have had all the figures drawn to a scale, but lie engraver has not been successful in realizing this intention. The outline is accurate, and there is an approximation to one standard of proportion in the different figures; but it is not such as enables me to exhibit a scale.
