Abstract

Welcome to Porous City ! Welcome to a porous society ! Welcome to cities that want to be open and porous ! Our cities consist of buildings that are introverted and not mixed with urban life. They are closed. How to open them ? How can we introduce pockets for encounters, for streams of circulation, for green areas, for tunnels of cooling... What logics can be imagined in our towers to allow for this openness ? Using stepped floors ? Creating grottos ? Splitting towers ? Twisting blocks ? Every hypothesis leads to a series of interventions. How far can we go before the tower collapses, before it is unaffordable ? Together, these series form an army of towers that contributes to a more porous city. Why wait ?

Abstract

How can agriculture contribute to the sustainable development of European cities? How can agriculture and horticulture create vital urban spaces that have new social and ecological qualities and are also economically viable? Urban Agriculture Europe is the first comprehensive, transdisciplinary publication about urban agriculture in Europe. Apart from well-known examples of urban food gardens in Western European metropolises, this volume also studies innovative forms of agriculture on the urban periphery, bringing in experiences in Eastern and Southern Europe. The contributions approach urban agriculture from the point of view of social science, the economy, agricultural ecology, and spatial planning and address the role of citizens, involved parties, and politics, as well as operational models and planning tools. Case studies from Barcelona, Dublin, Geneva, Milan, Sofia, Warsaw, and the Ruhr Metropolis allow a comparative view of European practice. Statements from involved parties and guidance for cities and regions round off the publication.

Abstract

The first instalment of the ‘Urban School Ruhr’ series, this volume draws from and reflects upon the learning platform’s experiences to date, while also looking to the future of urban practice in contemporary cities. It asks how we can best learn city-making, as well as how we might understand the political concept of communing for this purpose. Additionally, it explores the dialogue around intervention as a strategy for enacting urban change. A range of contributors build upon Urban School Ruhr’s foundational belief that experts and amateurs can together enact a space of critical exchange and knowledge transfer. Conversation, after all, is the first step to co-producing cities.
