The Crisis, Sustainability and Citizenship Group is one of the research groups of the Legal Institute of the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra and its main thematic research groups are trans-status, environmental and energy sustainability, economic and financial sustainability, social sustainability and political sustainability. Its work plan for the 2015-2020 five-year period focuses on the study of five problems: overcoming the crisis through new strategic ideas and reformulating administrative structures and governance guidelines; the challenge of intergenerational and social justice in the national and European context; the normative problems of trans-status; tax reforms in response to the challenges of justice and competitiveness; the reform of the state and political organizations in the open, global and networked society.

The current economic and financial crisis seemed to us to be a fundamental pretext for discussing the costs of the city and of life in the city, as well as the best way to share them among all. When the watchwords are to rationalize benefits, make efficient management decisions and reduce costs, it is important to know, first of all, which tasks each level of Administration will be responsible for and which instruments it can have for the respective financing. We know that the costs of building the city have been moving for a long time on private land, under regimes that define land use under a conception of the social function of property and with their own instruments to guarantee equality in the face of public burdens, in addition to the rules of urban management and urbanization and building, which they leave much of the construction of the city in charge of the private sector. It is in this context that it is urgent to discuss not only the legal nature of special contributions, compensation and rates for the realization, reinforcement and maintenance of urban infrastructure, but also the need to promote a rational and sustainable management of the city based on municipal programming. private activities.

Tendo como pano de fundo as Comemorações dos seus 500 anos,a Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra organizou um CongressoInternacional subordinado ao tema “A Biblioteca da Universidade:permanência e metamorfoses”, que teve lugar nos dias 16, 17 e 18 dejaneiro de 2014, no auditório da Reitoria da Universidade de Coimbra.O objetivo maior desta reunião científica foi o de refletir sobre o presentee o futuro das bibliotecas que servem públicos universitários. Numaoutra vertente, procurou chamar-se a atenção para a importância deque a Biblioteca se reveste, tendo em vista o progresso do conhecimentotécnico e científico. Por último, o Congresso pretendeu instituir-se comooportunidade de reflexão prospetiva e como lugar de encontro entre assensibilidades de todos os que trabalham profissionalmente com livros ecom outros suportes de natureza bibliográfica.

Esta obra visa dar a conhecer a história do Império Romano do Oriente – conhecido como Império Bizantino (séculos IV-XVI). Trata-se de um livro panorâmico, centrado nos aspetos políticos e militares, que pretende facilitar um primeiro contacto com a odisseia milenar da parte oriental do velho Império Romano, derrubado pelos povos bárbaros no século V.
