Der gebürtige Wiener Wolfgang von Weisl (1896-1974) ist der bedeutendste und radikalste revisionistische Zionist österreichischer Herkunft. Er hat nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg mit enormem, vielfältigem und auch militantem Einsatz als Politiker, Arzt, Offizier, Ökonom, Kolonist, Vortragender, Schriftsteller und Journalist an der Wegbereitung eines unabhängigen jüdischen Staates in Palästina mitgewirkt. Sein Lebenswerk, seine Autobiographie und seine zahlreichen politischen und literarischen Schriften - Zeitungsartikel, orientalische Sach- und Reisebücher, medizinische und religionspsychologische Abhandlungen, Gedichte, erzählende und dramatische Texte - sind bisher noch unerforscht. Diese vom Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds (FWF) geförderte, kommentierte und ausführlich monographisch eingeleitete Edition der beiden autobiographischen Texte Wolfgang von Weisls, "Lang ist der Weg ins Vaterland" und "Der Weg nach Latrun", leistet einen ersten grundlegenden Beitrag.

In the present study the first chapter deals with the biography of Chvyl'ovyj's open and controversially discussed questions. Against this background, a biographical sketch of its own arises through the critical comparison of previously published biographical material. The following chapter on Chvyl'ovyj's journalism will be preceded by an outline of literary politics in Ukraine in the 1920s. This section, which is supplemented with corresponding passages in the biography, presents in a cross-section the representatives and programs of the Ukrainian literary associations and the course of the literary discussion, with emphasis on Chvyl'ovyj's activities. This background is crucial for the understanding of Chvyl'ovyj's journalism, which is also examined in the third chapter from the perspective of Spengler reception. In der vorliegenden Studie wird im ersten Kapitel im Zusammenhang mit der Biographie Chvyl'ovyjs offenen und in bisherigen Darstellungen kontrovers diskutierten Fragen nachgegangen. Vor diesem Hintergrund entsteht durch den kritischen Vergleich bisher publizierter biographischer Materialien eine eigene biographische Skizze. Dem nachfolgenden Kapitel über Chvyl'ovyjs Publizistik wird ein Abriß der Literaturpolitik in der Ukraine der 20er Jahre vorausgeschickt. Dieser Teil, der sich mit entsprechenden Passagen in der Biographie ergänzt, stellt in einem Querschnitt die Vertreter und Programme der ukrainischen Literaturvereinigungen und den Verlauf der Literaturdiskussion dar, wobei der Schwerpunkt bei Chvyl'ovyjs Aktivitäten liegt. Dieser Hintergrund ist maßgeblich zum Verständnis der Publizistik Chvyl'ovyjs, die auch im dritten Kapitel unter dem speziellen Blickwinkel der Spengler-Rezeption untersucht wird.

The Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea, rich in history and charm, is of great geostrategic importance. This leads to political conflicts time and again. But what is everyday life like in Crimea beyond the discourses about law, borders and war? What do local intellectuals think about the situation today? Can Geopoetry help to counteract the current crisis? Tatjana Hofmann's ethnographic long-term observation explores these questions. Her poetic essay, illustrated with magnificent photographs by Alexander Barbuch, transcends the usual boundaries of genre and searches for perspectives far removed from common patterns of interpretation. Ivan Bunin's high opinion of his narrative "Temnye allei" (Paris, 1946) was rarely shared. In the field of view of the readers was too often the erotic topic - the criticism affected an unbiased reception of the book, whose coherence was only occasionally perceived. Abridged editions reinforced this effect in the episode. The study considers the "Temnye allei" for the first time in the interaction of external conditions and artistic intention, taking into account all simultaneously created, partly unpublished tales. The focus is on determining the genre of the book on the basis of extra and intratextlichen links such as structure, style and the central themes of love, death and memory. While a glance at the eventful history of its origins allows conclusions to be drawn about the book's intended construction, the critical examination of the history of editions and receptions illuminates the most diverse problems of acceptance in the perception of the book as a short prose link - and as Bunin's masterpiece. Im Blickfeld der Leser stand allzu häufig die erotische Thematik - die diesbezügliche Kritik beeinträchtigte eine unvoreingenommene Rezeption des Buches, dessen Kohärenz nur vereinzelt wahrgenommen wurde. Gekürzte Editionen verstärkten in der Folge diesen Effekt. Die Studie betrachtet die "Temnye allei" erstmals im Wirkungsgeflecht äußerer Bedingungen und künstlerischer Intention, unter Berücksichtigung aller zeitgleich entstandenen, teilweise bis heute unveröffentlichten Erzählungen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Bestimmung der Genrezugehörigkeit des Buches auf Basis der extra- und intratextlichen Verknüpfungen wie Struktur, Stil und der zentralen Themenkreise Liebe, Tod und Erinnerung. Während ein Blick auf die bewegte Entstehungsgeschichte Rückschlüsse auf die geplante Anlage des Buches erlaubt, erhellt die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der Editions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte die unterschiedlichsten Akzeptanzprobleme bei der Wahrnehmung des Buches als Kurzprosaverknüpfung - und als Meisterwerk Bunins.

This book investigates the crucial question of 'restitution' in the work of W. G. Sebald. Written by leading scholars from a range of disciplines, with a foreword by his English translator Anthea Bell, the essays collected in this volume place Sebald's oeuvre within the broader context of European culture in order to better understand his engagement with the ethics of aesthetics. Whilst opening up his work to a range of under-explored areas including dissident surrealism, Anglo-Irish relations, contemporary performance practices and the writings of H. G. Adler, the volume notably returns to the original German texts. The recurring themes identified in the essays - from Sebald's carefully calibrated syntax to his self-consciousness about 'genre', from his interest in liminal spaces to his literal and metaphorical preoccupation with blindness and vision - all suggest that the 'attempt at restitution' constitutes the very essence of Sebald's understanding of literature.
