Abstract

This book presents Stage Climbing, an innovative seven stage developmental model as a new tool to help practitioners recognize cognitions, attitudes and behaviors- typical of different life stages and thus levels of maturity- in order to select the most effective treatment interventions with adult clients. It is the first book to integrate cognitive behavioral (CBT) concepts into the entire human development spectrum for any area of life that clients choose to work on. It demonstrates how resistance to change can reflect thinking and behavioral patterns that are characteristic of earlier developmental stages. It also presents a model of maturity along with treatment strategies and action steps to motivate change, as well as reactivate a client's natural and organic maturation process. Practitioners at all levels from diverse disciplines and modalities will learn to assess how, why, and where clients are ʽʽstuckʼʼ developmentally. This volume offers practitioners, who treat individuals, couples and/or families a psychologically integrated road map that guides clients to take responsibility for living their best life, by removing self-created obstacles which prevent this from occurring naturally. The integration of the most robust aspects of psychodynamics, developmental psychology, and cognitive behavioral therapy will help the field continue to evolve, by providing state of the art interventions to help clients make mature and healthy changes in their lives. All mental health practitioners, regardless of their therapeutic orientations can use the strategies in this book to assess the underlying core belief patterns of clients at each life stage, and apply appropriate interventions to challenge self-defeating beliefs, and proactively work on agreed upon desired outcomes.

Abstract

This book introduces studies on infant and early childhood development that are in a permanent dialogue with the psychology of music, the philosophy of mind, and human movement studies. They are based on an innovative framework that combines embodied cognition, the multimodal approach to child development, and the second-person perspective in social cognition. This frame of reference allows authors to revisit relevant topics in developmental psychology, such as adult-infant interactions; early intersubjective experiences; the development of perceptual, verbal and gestural communication skills; as well as the complexity of play in infancy and early childhood. In the field of infancy and early childhood studies, the three viewpoints brought together in this volume had a clear innovative impact. Embodied psychology showed the body to be the primary agent in the interactions that shape the infant's psyche. The second-person perspective exhibited the direct, transparent, I-Thou contact involved in the first patterns of reciprocity between adult and infant, and the multimodal theory of perceptual development revealed an infant immersed in a multisensory environment conveying information to all perceptual systems as a unified experience. The studies presented in this volume combine these three viewpoints and link them through the use of analytical tools and concepts from the temporal arts (music and dance). This way of conducting empirical research on some central topics in early infancy led to an aesthetic conception of development that emphasizes bodily experience, temporal affects and their intertwining with symbolic capacitiesMoving and Interacting in Infancy and Early Childhood: An Embodied, Intersubjective, and Multimodal Approach to the Interpersonal World will provide innovative tools for developmental and cognitive psychologists studying the development of early socio-cognitive skills in infants and young children, and will also serve as a rich source of information for researchers and practitioners in other fields, such as education and nursing, who can benefit from cutting-edge knowledge in developmental sciences.

Abstract

This book examines attachment-informed parent coaching to address emotional and behavioral problems of young children. The volume summarizes relevant developmental and attachment theory research and describes how it supports an attachment-informed parent coaching approach. The book addresses the challenges of parenting young children with disruptive behavior or who are emotionally reactive, and how mental health providers can help parents address these challenges. Chapters describe how therapists can use their observations of parents and children interacting to tailor parent coaching according to different child and adult attachment patterns. It discusses the important role of adult attachment in tailoring parent coaching, including an understanding of how the therapist's working model of attachment influences their work with families. Each chapter includes information on current research as well as rich examples of how this research can inform clinical practice. Key areas of coverage include: The role of adult attachment in working with young children. Addressing secure, ambivalent/resistant, avoidant, disorganized, and controlling child-parent dyads. Coaching parents who have a secure, earned secure, preoccupied, dismissing, or unresolved working model of attachment. Working with adopted children and children in foster care. This book is an essential resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as clinicians and professionals in developmental psychology, social work, pediatrics, family studies, nursing, child psychiatry, pediatrics, occupational therapy, and early childhood education.

Abstract

This book represents the very first, so far unpublished, translation of Piotr Galperin’s (1902-1988) dissertation, defended in 1938 during his employment in the All-Ukrainian Psycho-Neurological Academy (AUPA) in Kharkiv, Ukraine. In his candidate dissertation Galperin examined the differences in tool use between humans and animals and argued that there was a fundamental difference between tools developed and used by humans and the auxiliary means used by animals. Galperin showed that human use of tools totally differs from the way tools are utilised by animals as ‘an extension’ of their limbs. He suggested that tools created and used by humans encapsulate cultural and historical experience developed in human practices which have to be mastered. Human engagement with these tools reorganise the existing and enhance the development of new psychological functions and that human consciousness originates and develops in the external tool-mediated activities. The development of new psychological functions stimulates the systemic and meaningful organisation of human consciousness. In addition, as opposed to animal mind, human consciousness undergoes developmental transformations initiated in tools- and speech-mediated activities. Galperin’s research reveals the unity of the external tool-mediated and the internal psychological activity of humans. These findings are influential as they adopted the foundations of the theory of Vygotsky and extended them without changing the essence of Vygotsky’s legacy. Galperin’s dissertation can be considered as a missing jig-saw puzzle which connects the legacy of Vygotsky, the contribution of Leontiev and their followers who worked in the cultural-historical and activity traditions. This translation of the dissertation in English makes it available for the cultural-historical scholars in the West and provides insights into the invaluable contributions of Piotr Galperin.
