Abstract

"There are various different psychological therapies but their shared aim is to help the sufferers of mental disorders. The role of assessment and the decisions following that are crucial in the treatment process. The first encounter between the patient and the assessor defines the problem and shapes the possible treatment model. However, formal training in assessment is non-existent. This volume attempts to offer guidelines for assessment and it also offers general information on assessment in a concise form, with the help of clinical vignettes and case examples.'Our purpose has been to keep the book as simple as possible so that it may be easily accessible to beginners as well as to provide an initial structure and overview for more experienced practitioners. We therefore hope that this work may serve as a useful guide for referrers, trainees and therapists practicing in a variety of psychotherapeutic settings, including those in the National Health Service and in private practice, and begin to foster further debate in this field.'- From the Preface"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

In The Making of a Counsellor case studies illustrate work done with `impossible' clients; other essays about orphans and debtors, accountancy trainees and expatriate employees explore new ways of thinking about these groups of people. More traditional, perhaps, are essays about work with neurological patients, adolescent youth club members, traumatised families, and the chronically mentally ill. Each essay breaks fresh ground in understanding the complexity of the problems and the richness of the counselling relationship. In vivid narrative, The Making of a Counsellor. c

Abstract

The main values and principles of Transactional Analysis, in its original psychodynamic matrix, become a concrete experience in this book thanks to the accurate description of the daily practice of a long-experienced therapist: Anna Emanuela Tangolo. Analyzing several cases, the author examines the clinical tools of Berne's group therapy and the analysis of dreams, without however neglecting other important aspects such as preparing the setting or leading an interview. Particular relevance is given to the therapeutic relationship, seen as the interweaving of an experience in order to send stimuli to the patient so as to re-structure his or her intrapsychic world through rigorous and precise inputs, analysable in linguistic sequences. This book is meant not only for those who study psychotherapy, but also for anyone who wants to learn about clinical TA and its functioning.

Abstract

This book reports on clinical work in, and at the boundaries of, the intermediate space between patient and therapist, perhaps the space between reaching toward dreams and taking the transference. Though the clinical work to be described here was influenced quite deeply by the writing of Winnicott primarily and then of Lacan, it is meant to stand for itself as the record of - and a set of stories about - one therapist's experiences and learning. The chapters that follow take up a range of clinical conditions (hopelessness, self-destructiveness, psychosis), clinical phenomena (regression, impasse, trauma), technical issues (interpretation, transference, free association) and related topics (dreams, creativity, the analytic setting) Most of this work took place at the Austen Riggs Center, a small psychiatric hospital in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, in which quite troubled patients are offered intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy in a completely open and voluntary therapeutic community setting.
