The present book summarises investigations on Lake Verevi (surface 12.6 ha, mean depth 3.6 m), located in the Estonian town of Elva, initiated since 1929. The seventeen articles in this issue deal with a wide range of questions, starting with a holistic overview of the ecological status, over assessments of long-term changes in biotic and abiotic conditions and finishing with proposed restoration plans. Abiotic chapters provide calculations on water and mass balance, distribution and fractions of phosphorus in the sediment, optical properties and penetration of radiation in the water column, sedimentation rate during the formation of stratification, and nitrogen circulation characteristics. All of these phenomena explain the special environmental features of this highly stratified lake. Long-term changes, seasonal development, primary production and resource ratios inducing the distribution of species composition of various biota (bacterio-, phyto and zooplankton, macrozoobenthos, fish) are discussed. The most important issues in this book are long-term investigations on a complex ecosystem, the phenomenon of partial meromixis, the description of restoration methods, and the existence of narrow microniches for plankton in the water column. The book aims at a large audience, including researchers and students of complex limnological questions and of intricate ecological systems, but also to managers and decision makers. The present volume firmly establishes Lake Verevi as a model system of a natural aquatic habitat, experiencing a multitude of anthropogenic pressures, but for which restoration plans aim to provide sustainable management in the future. Reprinted from Hydrobiologia volume 547 (2005).

For the past two centuries and more, the West has acquired the treasures of antiquity to fill its museums, so that visitors to the British Museum in London, the Louvre in Paris, and the Metropolitan in New York -- to name but a few -- can wonder at the ingenuity of humanity throughout the ages. But all this came at a huge cost. From the Napoleonic campaigns that filled the Louvre with Egyptian artifacts, to the plunder that accompanied British imperialism across the globe, the amazing collections in the West's great museums were wrenched from their original context by means that often amounted to theft. Now the countries from which they came would like them back. The Greek demand for the return of the Elgin Marbles is only the tip of an iceberg that includes a host of world-historical artifacts, from the Benin Bronzes to the Bust of Nefertiti. In the opinion of many people, many of these items are looted property -- and should be returned immediately.

Software validation is one of the most cost-intensive tasks in modern software production processes. The objective of FATES/RV 2006 was to bring sci- tists from both academia and industry together to discuss formal approaches to test and analyze programs and monitor and guide their executions. Formal approaches to test may cover techniques from areas like theorem proving, model checking, constraint resolution, static program analysis, abstract interpretation, Markov chains, and various others. Formal approaches to runtime veri?cation use formal techniques to improve traditional ad-hoc monitoring techniques used in testing, debugging, performance monitoring, fault protection, etc. The FATES/RV 2006 workshop selected 14 high-quality papers out of 31 submissions. Each paper underwent at least three anonymous reviews by either PCmembersorexternalreviewersselectedbythem.Inadditiontothe14regular papers, the proceedings contain two papers corresponding to the invited talks by Wolfgang Grieskamp (Microsoft Research, USA) and Oege de Moor (Oxford University, UK). This was the ?rst time that the two workshops, FATES and RV, were held together. The success of this joint edition shows that the integration of these two communities can be pro?table for both of them. Previous editions of these two events were held in the following places: FATES 2001 was held in A- borg (Denmark) and FATES 2002 in Brno (Czech Republic). In both cases, the workshop was a?liated with CONCUR. FATES 2003 and FATES 2004 were held in Montreal(Canada)and Vienna (Austria), respectively,in a?liationwith ASE.FATES 2005wasco-locatedwith CAV in Edinburgh(UK). Since 2003,the FATES workshop proceedings have been published by Springer (LNCS series).
