The contemporary context is defined by a unique conjuncture. On one hand, we witness the revival of the Radical Architecture that from the avant-garde experiments of the origins recovers creative processes and iconographic fragments while nullifying the original ideological and political values. On the other hand, we see social protests in defense of fundamental rights of democracy, as in 1968. With these premises, Architecture is now reinvestigating those ephemeral experiments that have endured half a century as new "stone monuments" capable of indicating new perspectives for both research and design. Placing UFO group, one of the authors of those still poorly known "monuments", at the core of the contemporary debate means investigating their formal and seductive aspects, but also the ideological, political and social values with which objects, installations and happenings have been innervated, transforming them into devices of an architecture nourished by literature, art and political commitment for the foundation of an eloquent and activist project even more radical than the well-known Superstudio and Archizoom

Operating from 1968 to 1972, with the aim of redefining architectural forms and languages in the dawning era of technology and mass consumption, Group 9999 would come to develop – within the Italian Neo-Avant-Garde context – a new project form, in which coexisted the intimacy of the manual process and the television media event, technological progress and ecological sentiment. The Space Electronic Discotheque, which 9999 built and managed directly, would be the purest expression of its research: a local venue for the global phenomena of the Sixties, like rock music and underground culture, as well as a personal autocracy for the practical realization of its own technological-Franciscan philosophy.“9999. An alternative to one-way architecture” describes for the first time the birth and evolution of 9999, beginning from its travels throughout the Orient and the United States, carrying out its initial years of activity under the name 1999, through its participation in the exhibit “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” at the New York MoMA.

Cloud ’68 – Paper Voice pays homage the radical architecture movement in Europe from the 1950s to the 1970s, which initiated numerous new forms of experimental expression. A selection of 177 graphic pieces – lithographs, drawings, original etchings, and ephemera from the personal collection of the Chilean architect Smiljan Radić—reveal the scope of the diverse architectural approaches from those years. Works by Constant, Utopie, Guy Debord, Asger Jorn, Haus-Rucker-Co, Archigram, and Superstudio, among others, are displayed in 33 panels that recall Aby Warburg’s ‘Mnemosyne Atlas’. The publication is complemented by interview fragments by the critic and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, who interviewed the protagonists of this architectural movement, plus three essays by Tom McDonough, Moisés Puente and by Lara Schrijver.
