Initié dans le cadre du programme de recherche Sorbonne War Studies, cet ouvrage collectif, inédit en langue française, réunit une dizaine d'universitaires autour de la question de l'évolution de l'usage et des rôles des forces armées. Il contribue à renouveler la teneur des débats sur le contrôle démocratique des forces armées en promouvant un cadre analytique interdisciplinaire (Droit, Histoire, Science politique et Sociologie), et une démarche comparative (France, Allemagne, Etats-Unis, Royaume-Uni). Le présent ouvrage insiste, en outre, sur la dimension méthodologique et empirique du travail d'enquête sur les politiques de défense et de sécurité.
