«Il 18 luglio del 386, al primo assalto dei Galli, l’esercito romano si sbandò. L’ala sinistra venne respinta nel fiume. In preda al panico, in una gigantesca rotta, molti affogarono, altri caddero schiacciati dai compagni in fuga. Metus Gallicus: il terrore per le orde galliche penetrò nella coscienza più profonda dei Romani, senza mai dissolversi, e riemerse nei momenti di maggiore emergenza». Dal nero giorno dell’Allia, i barbari evocano antichi incubi e sopite angosce. Funesti fantasmi che tornano realtà nell’agosto 410. Roma rivive la violenza terribile di un Sacco che umilia la città per secoli signora sulle genti. È solo l’inizio: nel 455 i Vandali entrano a Roma e la devastano indisturbati; passano meno di vent’anni e nel 472 di nuovo un Sacco dopo un lungo assedio. Infine la guerra greco-gotica, che annienta lo splendore della città antica: tra il 535 e il 552 Roma è per cinque volte sotto assedio. Dal racconto dei fatti, al mito, alla memoria: il libro segue le trasformazioni che la sequenza dei Sacchi per oltre un secolo provocò nell’immagine della città, nei comportamenti e nei pensieri dei suoi cittadini. Alla fine del mondo antico, il travaglio di una civiltà si esprime nella tormentata rovina della sua capitale. E il disastro riecheggia spaventoso nei secoli; fino al Sacco del 1527, quando il mito della Roma che rinasce si rovescia nel più drammatico epilogo: di nuovo eserciti che calano sulla città per devastarla, di nuovo distruzioni. Lanzichenecchi e imperiali abbattono i simboli della nuova Roma nel momento della sua più splendida fioritura. Si chiude nel sangue un millennio di storia e la città cambia ancora il suo volto e la sua identità.

The Resilience of the Roman Empire' discusses the relationship between population and regional development in the Roman world from the perspective of archaeology. By adapting a comparative approach, the focus of the volume lies on exploring the various ways in which regional communities actively responded to population growth - or decline for that matter - in order to keep going on the land available to them. The theoretical framework - or at least the starting point - for the case studies is the agricultural intensification models developed by Thomas Malthus and Ester Boserup. In order to advance the debate on the validity of these models for identifying the societal and economic pathways of the Roman world, the contributors incorporate the concepts of resilience and diversity into their approach, and shift attention from the longue-durée to how people managed to sustain themselves over shorter periods of time. The aim of the volume is not to discard the theories of Malthus and Boserup, but rather to deconstruct overly strict Malthusian or Boserupian scenarios, and as such introduce novel and more layered ways of thinking by exploring resilience and variability in human responses to population growth/decline in the Roman world.
