The acceptance of reason with uncertainty can help learners successfully manage their occupations and lives during the accelerations prominent in the 21st century. As William Ayers states: “Pritscher tilts his lance at the petrified orthodoxy we call teaching and learning, inviting us on a wild journey into the heart of education.” The book elaborates on David Geoffrey Smith’s question: “Why does so much educational ‘research’ today seem so unenlightening, repetitive and incapable of moving beyond itself? The answer must be because it is ‘paradigmatically stuck’, and cannot see beyond the parameters of its current imaginal space.” The book offers help to go beyond the current imaginal space through what is called kaplearning. Kaplearning can help the reader to defamiliarize the common by facilitating “letting go”. Pritscher takes an avant-garde approach to learning, pushing the boundaries of the long accepted norm “certainty and order” and modernizing education by trading the old “optimal way” with a new skill to “reason with uncertainty”. This resilience to ambiguity is precisely where human intelligence has full advantage over machine intelligence. Pritscher’s book is impressive and remarkably well-timed, as recent articles in Nature show that online game players can make surprising breakthroughs in science with a well-chosen confluence of effective sources and a bit of creativity with protein folding. Citizen science has led to solutions that scientists and computer simulators have struggled for years, proving that even with little or no scientific training, knowing what to ignore can invite innovating ways to think and execute. Open and distance learning has been used in many ways in the recent past to provide both primary education and adult education. The Commonwealth of Learning works with governments, schools and universities with the aim of strengthening the capacities of Commonwealth member countries in developing human resources required for their economic and social development. Many existing policy documents link distance education with new information and communication technologies, portraying them as a promising universal access and exponential growth of learning. This book answers the key questions to these issues and assesses the impact and effect of the experience of basic education at a distance all over the world and in a wide variety of forms. Disengagement of youth from schooling is an issue of significant national and international concern, and is a key driver of educational policy and reform that look to maximise school retention for the benefit of both students and the wider community. In Australia, Flexible Learning Options (FLOs) have arisen as a response to the premature disengagement from schooling of a sizeable number of Australian youth. FLOs attend to the educational, social and well-being needs of young people experiencing complex life circumstances, yet empirical evidence of their value to date has been largely anecdotal. The significance of this book lies in its innovative approach to gauging the value of FLOs—to young people themselves, as well as the wider Australian community. Drawing on past research and new findings from a national investigation, the authors provide novel insight into the pressures pushing young people out of schools and the mechanisms at work in FLOs to re-engage them in education. The varied contributions of this book elucidate many of the measurable impacts of FLOs on the life trajectories of disenfranchised youth, including improved economic integration, mental and emotional wellbeing, and myriad other outcomes. The significance of this project lies in its exploration of how young people and staff understand the transformative nature of the FLO experience, with an analysis that brings to light the wider value of this type of educational intervention in terms of long term community benefit.
