Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

“This book is ambitious, and definitely fills a gap that has existed for a long time in the literature on basic income. It can be considered a seminal contribution to the field. As a result of its pioneering nature, it should become a reference on the subject.” -Thibault Laurentjoye, EHESS Paris – PSL Research University, France “This is a very valuable project that will make a critically important contribution to the literature on basic income. By moving from general principles to the question of implementation in a well-researched and empirically sound manner, this book shifts the debate toward more practical considerations at a time when there is renewed interest in the idea. The authors tackle the issue head on of how to fund a basic income.” -Laurent Dobuzinskis, Simon Fraser University, Canada This Palgrave Pivot second edition argues that basic income is, in fact, affordable. The contributors approach the topic from the perspectives of three different countries—Canada, Switzerland, and Australia—to overcome objections that a universal program to keep all citizens above the poverty line would be too expensive to implement. They assess the complex array of revenue sources that can make universal basic income feasible, from the underestimated value of public program redundancies to new and so far, unaccounted publicly owned assets. This new edition adds an analysis for financing basic income in the United States, as well as considering the basic income potential in a country of far more modest economic resources, Portugal. The COVID-19 pandemic is discussed in a new Prologue, demonstrating the need for universal economic security as a precautionary measure for unforeseen crises. New research and compelling analyses are included throughout, to provide support for a dual basic income proposal.

Abstract

This is the first book to describe the entire developmental history of the human aspects of economics. The issue of “self-interest” is discussed throughout, from pre-Adam Smith to contemporary neuroeconomics, representing a unique contribution to economics. Though the notion of self-interest has been interpreted in several ways by various schools of economics and economists since Smith first placed it at the heart of the field, this is the first book to focus on this important but overlooked topic. Traditionally, economic theory has presupposed that the core of human behavior is self-interest. Nevertheless, some economists, e.g. recent behavioral economists, have cast doubt on this “self-interested” explanation. Further, though many economists have agreed on the central role of self-interest in economic behavior, each economist’s positioning of self-interest in economic theory differs to some degree. This book helps to elucidate the position of self-interest in economic theory. Given its focus, it is a must-read companion, not only on the history of economic thought but also on economic theory. Furthermore, as today’s capitalism is increasingly causing people to wonder just where self-interest lies, it also appeals to general readers.

Abstract

This edited collection is a novel book with contributions from eleven expert researchers on the history of tourism in Europe. This book explores the growth of tourism in contemporary postwar Europe, especially during the periods following the First and Second World Wars and the Spanish Civil War. It reveals both the work carried out by social agents and institutions to develop tourism, and the contribution of tourism in boosting the economy and the recovery of morale in the Old Continent Its origin is the International Congress Postguerres / Aftermaths of War, organized by the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Barcelona, in Barcelona, in June 2019. In this Congress, professors Carmelo Pellejero and Marta Luque coordinated the session Post-war and tourism in contemporary Europe, in which all the authors of the book participated.

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive mathematical description and analysis of the delegate allocation processes in the US Democratic and Republican presidential primaries, focusing on the role of apportionment methods and the effect of thresholds—the minimum levels of support required to receive delegates. The analysis involves a variety of techniques, including theoretical arguments, simplicial geometry, Monte Carlo simulation, and examination of presidential primary data from 2004 to 2020. The book is divided into two parts: Part I defines the classical apportionment problem and explains how the implementation and goals of delegate apportionment differ from those of apportionment for state representation in the US House of Representatives and for party representation in legislatures based on proportional representation. The authors then describe how delegates are assigned to states and congressional districts and formally define the delegate apportionment methods used in each state by the two major parties to allocate delegates to presidential candidates. Part II analyzes and compares the apportionment methods introduced in Part I based on their level of bias and adherence to various notions of proportionality. It explores how often the methods satisfy the quota condition and quantifies their biases in favor or against the strongest and weakest candidates. Because the methods are quota-based, they are susceptible to classical paradoxes like the Alabama and population paradoxes. They also suffer from other paradoxes that are more relevant in the context of delegate apportionment such as the elimination and aggregation paradoxes. The book evaluates the extent to which each method is susceptible to each paradox. Finally, it discusses the appointment of delegates based on divisor methods and notions of regressive proportionality. This book appeals to scholars and students interested in mathematical economics and political science, with an emphasis on apportionment and social choice theory.

Abstract

The second edition of this Palgrave Pivot offers a history of and proof against claims of "buying power" and the impact this myth has had on understanding media, race, class and economics in the United States. For generations Black people have been told they have what is now said to be more than one trillion dollars of "buying power," and this book argues that commentators have misused this claim largely to blame Black communities for their own poverty based on squandered economic opportunity. This book exposes the claim as both a marketing strategy and myth, while also showing how that myth functions simultaneously as a case study for propaganda and commercial media coverage of economics. In sum, while “buying power” is indeed an economic and marketing phrase applied to any number of racial, ethnic, religious, gender, age or group of consumers, it has a specific application to Black America. A new foreword by Dr. Darrick Hamilton, Henry Cohen Professor of Economics and Urban Policy at the New School (in New York, USA), and a new chapter on cryptocurrencies are included in this new edition. Dr. Jared A. Ball Professor of Africana and Communication Studies at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD. and host of the “iMiXWHATiLiKE!” podcast. His decades of journalism, media, writing, and political work can be found at imixwhatilike.org. Ball has also been named as one of 2022’s Marguerite Casey Foundation’s Freedom Scholars.

Abstract

This open access book traces the development of sociology in Germany from the late 19th century to the present day, providing a concise overview of the main actors, institutional processes, theories, methods, topics and controversies. Throughout the book, the author relates the discipline’s history to its historical, economic, political and cultural contexts. The book begins with sociology in the German Reich, the Weimar Republic, National Socialism and exile, before exploring sociology after 1945 as a ‘key discipline’ of the young Federal Republic of Germany, and reconstructing the periods from 1945 to 1968 and from 1968 to 1990. The final chapters are devoted to sociology in the German Democratic Republic and the period from 1990 to the present day. This work will appeal to students and scholars of sociology, and to a general readership interested in the history of Germany. Stephan Moebius is Professor of Sociological Theory and Intellectual History at the University of Graz, Austria.

Abstract

This book is the third installment in a series of volumes looking at episodes in American economic history from a public choice perspective. Each chapter discusses citizens, special interests, and government officials responding to economic incentives in both markets and politics. In doing so, the book provides fresh insights into important periods of American history, from the Rhode Island’s 1788 Referendum on the U.S. Constitution and the political influence of women’s clubs in the United States. The volume features economic historians such as Ruth Wallis Herndon, junior public choice scholars such as Jayme Lemke and Leo Krasnozhon, and political scientists such as Michael Faber. This volume will be useful for researchers and students interested in economics, history, political science, economic history, public choice, and political economy.

Abstract

“The volume is a most original and pioneering application of the synthesis of theories derived from the contributions of past and present economists to an empirical study of inflation in Sri Lanka. It is a compelling case study of how drawing on the elements of past and present writings may be made into illuminating theoretical narratives to apply to historical episodes in individual societies. The volume shows the value of how understanding past theories in their original contexts may be used with or without modification to make sense of happenings in our times.” ---- GC Harcourt, Emeritus Reader in The History of Economic Theory, Cambridge, 1998; Emeritus Fellow, Jesus College, 1998; Professor Emeritus, Adelaide, 1988; Visiting Professorial Fellow, UNSW Australia, 2010–2016; Honorary Professor, UNSW Australia, 2016–2022 The book provides a new conceptualisation of inflation in underdeveloped economies, through Sri Lanka’s historical experience. It outlines a general theory of nationalisms in their diverse manifestations across the world, within a historical perspective of capitalist development and underdevelopment. The book, therefore, seeks to capture the production mode holistically, within both its infrastructural and superstructural levels probing their interactions. The theoretical structure through which inflation is analysed synthesises the theory of unproductive labour and Marxian theory of prices of production with labour surplus theory of late Dr. S. B. D. De Silva in the context of underdevelopment. In this light, Professor David Laibman’s Allocation Problem is resolved within a Marxist framework to provide an operational significance to the theory and its application. In the same vein the book also provides a new theoretical interpretation of Sri Lanka’s historical development from the British period onwards through application of theories of capitalist development and surplus labour. Dhanusha Gihan Pathirana has been an Economist for nearly 10 years at Asia Capital PLC, Sri Lanka, a multinational investment bank operating within the Asian region based in Sri Lanka. Dr. Chandana Aluthge has 24 years of experience as a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and is currently a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the university. He published a number of journal articles and presented papers on issues pertaining to Finance and Economic Development in Sri Lanka. He holds a PhD in Economics from Free University Amsterdam, Netherlands.
