Cet ouvrage a pour point de départ une romance médiévale irlandaise intitulée Buile Suibhne, qui relate la légende de Sweeney Geilt, roi païen maudit par un saint, métamorphosé en oiseau et condamné à la folie et à l’errance. Cette œuvre atypique ayant inspiré nombre d’artistes irlandais, l’étude se concentre sur les exploitations les plus abouties du mythe de Sweeney : deux poèmes et un roman d’Austin Clarke, At Swim-Two-Birds de Flann O’Brien, Sweeney Astray et Sweeney’s Flight de Seamus Heaney, les poèmes composant « Sweeney Redivivus », ainsi que les recréations poétiques ou théâtrales proposées par Lucy Brennan, Paula Meehan et Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. Ces différents textes recèlent des traitements extrêmement variés du mythe, de la réappropriation lyrique à la parodie, de l’auto-allégorisation à la démythification, de l’hommage à la subversion. Tout en dévoilant les arcanes d’une œuvre singulière, cette étude souhaite offrir un éclairage novateur sur les ressorts de la création littéraire irlandaise des XXe et XXIe siècles dans ses rapports au mythe et à la tradition.
