William K. Powers, un des meilleurs spécialistes de la culture et de la langue lakota, a séjourné et travaillé pendant plus de trente années dans la réserve des Sioux oglalas de Pine Ridge dans le Dakota du Sud. Participant à leur vie religieuse, traditionnelle et sociale, il nous fait découvrir avec cet ouvrage ce qu'est la langue sacrée des Lakotas, de quelle façon, dans les structures du langage et de la pensée, cette langue se forme, comment elle est utilisée par les " personnes sacrées " et de quelle manière, contrairement à d'autres langues originelles, - comme le latin le fut pour les catholiques -, elle ne cesse d'évoluer. De fait, on voit comment cette langue demeure constamment en prise sur le présent, vivante et apte à répondre aujourd'hui à ce qu'en attendent ceux qui à la fois la comprennent et l'emploient. Il n'est donc guère étonnant que Powers traite des divers noms donnés aux "guérisseurs sacrés" des cinq continents et dresse alors un parallèle inédit entre l'homme-médecine lakota et le prêtre occidental. Par là, il démontre comment ces fonctions ont été jusqu'ici opposées de façon erronée et quels points les rapprochent, notamment les délégations de pouvoir et le fait de communiquer avec le surnaturel, que leur confèrent leurs sociétés respectives. Scientifiquement élaboré, ce livre passionnant ne nécessite aucune connaissance particulière pour en apprécier à la fois la richesse et la rigueur. Il ne concerne en principe que la langue sacrée des Lakotas mais il est réalisé et fouillé de telle manière, avec une telle rigueur, qu'il ne peut manquer de captiver le lecteur intéressé par les langues originelles du monde entier, sans qu'il ait besoin d'être spécialement formé à la linguistique ou à l'ethnologie

This is a fascinating study of religious culture in England from 1050 to 1250. Drawing on the wealth of material about religious belief and practice that survives in the chronicles, Carl Watkins explores the accounts of signs, prophecies, astrology, magic, beliefs about death, and the miraculous and demonic. He challenges some of the prevailing assumptions about religious belief, questioning in particular the attachment of many historians to terms such as 'clerical' and 'lay', 'popular' and 'elite', 'Christian' and 'pagan' as explanatory categories. The evidence of the chronicles is also set in its broader context through explorations of miracle collections, penitential manuals, exempla and sermons. The book traces shifts in the way the supernatural was conceptualized by learned writers and the ways in which broader patterns of belief evolved during this period. This original account sheds important light on belief during a period in which the religious landscape was transformed.
