Après huit ouvrages, de la collection «Métiers, techniques et artisans» étudiant l'archéologie industrielle, et abordant par des entretiens ethnologiques des récits de vie et des tours de mains ou des savoirs appelés à disparaître inexorablement, voici les «Moulins du cuir et de la peau» qui accorde d'abord une place particulière à la production des écorces qui, après broyage dans un moulin, donnent cette matière naturelle et fragile, le tan. Sont ensuite, traitées les usines d'extrait tannant de châtaignier qui ont aussi apporté nouveauté et modernité dans les pratiques de ce vieux métier. Enfin, l'ouvrage aborde la question des moulins à chamoiser, spécialisés dans le foulage des peaux, tannées avec de l'huile de poisson. «Moulins du cuir et de la peau» présente la première synthèse consacrée à ces industries oubliées, où des ouvriers ont sans relâche oeuvré pour donner des produits de qualité, presque éternels.

With a wide experience spanning over thirty years in the Leather subsector Dr. M Mwinyihija embarked on his doctoral studies at the University of Aberdeen, focusing on the latest ecotoxicological and novel techniques that could provide environmental diagnostic insights to the tanning industry. Certain criterion was fundamental in writing this book; that the tanning industry is a major source of pollution worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Indeed the developed ecotoxicological and analytical techniques were deliberately designed on the basis of being rapid, simple and inexpensive and directed towards resolving the tanning industry challenges on terrestrial and aquatic systems. Thus the resultant research data reported, incorporates both field related and laboratory based techniques to address underlying environmental problems in the tanning sector.

This book focuses on the effects of industrial effluents, specifically those generated from tanneries, on aquatic life i.e. fish.
