» (C.S. Chellappa, préface) A pioneer of contemporary Tamil literature, C. S. Chellappa gives us a founding text of modern Tamil fiction with his masterpiece, Vâdivâçal. The language is colourful, dense, precise, new, full of dialectal flavours, vibrant with the intimate life of the villagers. The subject is even more novel: described in detail, the jallikkattu, a centuries-old bullfighting game that is disappearing, is the setting for a dramatic conflict between an exceptional bull and the life and honour of two generations, father and son, of bullfighters. The vision zooms and alternates between the festive and complicit crowd and the drama of the duel between man and animal, the author's empathy going to all, for more emotion and truth. “Once you have read those pages you won’t forget the bull, the man and the vâdivâçal. I am aware that I introduce you into a new world.” (C.S. Chellappa, preface)

Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is an enigmatic compound abounding in animal tissues. It is present at relatively high concentrations in all electrically excitable tissues such as the brain, sensory organs, the heart, and in certain endocrine glands. Some of its physiological functions are already established, for example as an essential nutrient during development and as a neuromodulator or osmolyte, but the cellular mechanisms are still mostly a matter of conjecture. Moreover, there are a number of other putative functions of taurine less well known at present. The 15th International Taurine Meeting is a multidisciplinary symposium and the participants present different fields of biological science. Based on the proceedings of this meeting, Taurine 6: Taurine Today presents the most recent research on Taurine in papers written by top scientists in the field.

This volume provides the reader with an overview of taurine and its derivatives in modulating brain health. One of the highlights of this book is that taurine helps in the recovery of Alzheimer model mice from cognitive deficits by directly binding to oligomeric β-amyloid. In addition, this book includes very intriguing results from a study that looks into the effects of taurine-carbohydrate derivatives in stimulating fibrillogenesis of amyloid-b and in reducing Alzheimer-like behaviors. This book also highlights several new roles for taurine, including its novel effects on the various body structures encompassing the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the immune system, and the endocrine system, along with a role for taurine complements in nutrition. This edited book contains original articles and reviews based on oral and poster presentations at the 20th International Taurine Meeting held in Seoul, Korea in May 2016. The theme of this conference was ‘Taurine and Brain Health’. This volume will be relevant to anyone with an interest in the biological roles of taurine, from clinicians to nutritionists and from individuals working in the pharmaceutical industry to those working in food manufacturing.
