The book deals with the various facets of the Tea Party movement. The book shows the irony in the Tea Party claims that it is a nativist movement drawing on fundamental principles from the Constitution. In fact, most of the ideological base of the movement comes from the writings of Russian born Ayn Rand, Austrian economists Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, and the French economic journalist Claude-Frederic Bastiat. None of these people had anything to do with the American Revolution.

From the start of Barack Obama's presidency in 2009, conservative populist groups began fomenting political fractiousness, dissent, and surprising electoral success. The Tea Party was one of the major characters driving this story, changing the tone, tenor, and shape of the political landscape, one that this book sees as a product of media branding. Beyond the creation of the Tea Party, this project also investigates what the mass-mediated construction of the Tea Party tells us about the current media and cultural moment, specifically the role of journalism in a Web 2.0 age and contemporary American notions of democracy, citizenship, and belonging.

Prophets and Patriots takes readers inside two of the most active populist movements of the Obama era and highlights cultural convergences and contradictions at the heart of American political life. In the wake of the Great Recession and amid rising discontent with government responsiveness to ordinary citizens, the book follows participants in two very different groups-a progressive faith-based community organization and a conservative Tea Party group-as they set out to become active and informed citizens, put their faith into action, and hold government accountable. Both groups viewed themselves as the latest in a long line of prophetic voices and patriotic heroes who were carrying forward the promise of the American democratic project. This book presents a reassessment of the fundamental principles of the Tea Party movement. The Tea Party movement is largely associated with those who want a severely limited federal government spending far fewer taxpayer dollars. What gets less attention are the underlying Tea Party sentiments that, the book argues, are not so much false as they are terribly dated in light of the current national landscape. Such sentiments include prioritizing self-reliance, viewing politics as a “dirty business,” considering “free enterprise” unassailable, and believing the earth to be man’s possession. Brown skillfully and thoughtfully breaks from partisan considerations to get at the root of the movement, arguing that too many Tea Partiers are living in a world of their own, which, given so many pressing problems in the world, amounts to what Brown calls “sentimental mischief.”.
