Abstract

The first lesson on industrial design has to address questions such as «what is industrial design?» «what are its relations with the world of production?» «in what way does it change our perception of objects?». By now the word «design» is a part of our language used – relevantly, superficially or casually – to qualify myriad aspects of everyday experience. However the semantic elasticity of the term conceals a professional practice, a decision-making process and a productive research the results of which have profoundly affected our society and our lives. A designer does not simply design an object. Through the object he or she also conditions the physical and emotional scenario of the people who use it. Just as industry does not simply offer goods, but distributes culture or non-culture through its choices of product design. Explaining what this creative activity consists of, which spheres it comprises, who are the actors and what skills are required of them, this book aims to provide critical tools and stimulate further study.

Abstract

Cut-stone constructions are made of pre-hewn blocks dry assembled on top of each other. Owing to the formal complexity characteristic of these works, in order to design them it is necessary to have knowledge of the theory of lines, surfaces and their properties, as well as knowledge of the representation methods capable of rendering them on a plane surface. This knowledge set makes stereotomy the science that anticipates, in terms of theory and tools, modern descriptive geometry. These are the reasons for seeking the beginnings of descriptive geometry in stereotomy, that is, the reasons for the transformation of the mason's art of cutting stone into a bona fide science. Frézier's work fits among the last theoretical essays prior to the géométrie descriptive of Gaspard Monge. It is a treaty on solid geometry, devoted to the shape of the bodies, their intersections and the graphical methods necessary to represent them on a plane. In it the author draws up a rigorous theory that puts in place over two centuries of knowledge and experimentation on the subject of cutting stones.

Abstract

The Modern Age perspective was born as a bridge between art and science. It made art necessary and science visible; its breeding ground was architecture, which has always involved the lovers of one and the other in synergy. The field of thought in which perspective was conceived focused on the highest topics: the universe and the earth. Starting from astronomers-geographers and topographers, perspective was built over time as a discipline and a scientific-artistic method, systematically deriving a theorem from another, in a crescendo of complexity, which has sometimes taken on acrobatic forms, not open to evidence. The perspective techniques developed over time have accompanied the figures of architecture and of the graphic arts in their changes. Nowadays, the current information technologies make it possible to study the models of this artistic field with the confidence of being able to bring to light a new story about it. This volume collects the essays of 44 researchers who, within an Italian National Project launched in 2011 and coordinated by Riccardo Migliari (from Rome), joined the call of the group in Florence, which Maria Teresa Bartoli directed, in order to illustrate their method of cultural and technical approach to the theme through a case study: be it represented by a painting or by the passages of a treatise.

Abstract

A fast paced changing world requires dynamic methods and robust theories to enable designers to deal with the new product development landscape successfully and make a difference in an increasingly interconnected world. Designers continue stretching the boundaries of their discipline, and trail new paths in interdisciplinary domains, constantly moving the frontiers of their practice farther. This book, the successor to "Industrial Design - New Frontiers" (2011), develops the concepts present in the previous book further, as well as reaching new areas of theory and practice in industrial design. "Advances in Industrial Design Engineering" assists readers in leaping forward in their own practice and in preparing new design research that is relevant and aligned with the current challenges of this fascinating field.

Abstract

A new breed of modern designers is on the way. These non-traditional industrial designers work across disciplines, understand human beings, as well as business and technology thus bridging the gap between customer needs and technological advancement of tomorrow. This book uncovers prospective designer techniques and methods of a new age of industrial design, whose practitioners strive to construct simple and yet complex products of the future. The novel frontiers of a new era of industrial design are exposed, in what concerns the design process, in illustrating the use of new technologies in design and in terms of the advancement of culturally inspired design. The diverse perspectives taken by the authors of this book ensure stimulating reading and will assist readers in leaping forward in their own practice of industrial design, and in preparing new research that is relevant and aligned with the current challenges of this fascinating field.

Abstract

It is becoming increasingly possible to fundamentally intervene into human life using disruptive biotechnologies. On the other side, artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly. In this twofold development, the boundaries between human nature and technology are being blurred. This has provoked fundamental questions about what it is to be human, with which this volume engages interdisciplinarily.

Abstract

"Today, we are living in the New Space Age, where mass commercial space travel is almost within our grasp. This otherworldly possibility has opened up new cultural images of space, both real and fictional, and has caused fashion design and spacesuit engineering to intersect in new, exciting ways. Spacewear traverses this uncharted territory by exploring the changing imagination of space in fashion--and fashion in space--from the first Space Age to the 21st century. Exploring how space travel has stylistically and technologically framed fashion design on earth and how we need to revisit established design practices for the weightless environment. Spacewear connects the catwalk and the space station. This book draws together speculative fantasies in sci-fi films such as Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the engineered spacesuits Biosuit and the NASA Z-2 and with catwalk interpretations by the likes of Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, André Courréges, and Iris van Herpen. While the development of commercial space agencies has led to new concerns for style in garments for outer space that re-think fundamental design principles such as drape, high fashion has experimented with new possibilities for weightlessness that extend far beyond the 1960s vision of Space Age metallic fabrics and helmet-style headwear. Brownie takes the reader on a fascinating journey from fantasy to function and to form, deepening our understanding of this new category of fashion that is prompting new approaches to garment design and construction both on Earth and in outer space."--Page 4 of cover.
