L'unité des arts était au principe de l'esthétique des Nabis. Vuillard et Bonnard, Maurice Denis et Vallotton ont ainsi fortement contribué aux expériences novatrices du Théâtre de l'OEuvre durant les années 1893-1900. Ce haut lieu du symbolisme, sous la conduite d'Aurélien Lugné-Poe, ouvrit ses portes à Maeterlinck, Ibsen et à l'Ubu roi de l'excentrique Jarry. D'autres artistes sont ici évoqués qui, de Lautrec à Munch, ont attaché leur nom à ce renouveau de la scène parisienne.
