Abstract

The Theatre of Medieval Europe brings together the work of thirteen internationally recognized scholars of early drama to give a comprehensive account of recent findings in the field. Whilst reflecting the large body of research on English drama, the book widens the focus of its survey to represent the continental theatre of the period, with a succession of essays covering England, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, central Europe and the Low Countries. In addition, it deals with Latin musical and liturgical drama, and addresses both the archival and stage-orientated aspects of theatre research. In reviewing the field in this way, this collection not only offers an account of recent discoveries across a range of countries and types of drama, but also suggests the comparative and interdisciplinary ground on which these fields of research may increasingly come to meet and cross-fertilise one another in the future. A major feature of the book is its authoritative, chronological and fully-indexed bibliography, which should serve as an invaluable guide to the most significant contributions in the field.

Abstract

In recent years medieval drama has seen a marked revival of interest, much of it informed by an increasing appreciation of its multi-disciplinary nature. The drama of medieval Europe is not just literature; it is a social and indeed commercial event, essentially a communal enterprise, inextricably bound up with the structures of society. This collection of essays by international scholars working in collaboration examines various aspects of the inter-relationship between different European communities and the plays they performed. Its coverage of a wide range of theatres and play-types provides a critical and practical perspective on performance cultures of the Northern Middle Ages. The comparative nature of this volume has the effect of underlining drama as a true medieval mass medium.

Abstract

Abstract

The growth of urban life in the Middle Ages led to a flourishing of performance, drama and spectacle as we understand them today. Here is presented, for the first time, a collection of commissioned essays whose goal is to bring together a broad variety of interdisciplinary, innovative 'snapshots' from different geographical locations, time frames, traditions and scholarly fields. Contributors to Performance, Drama, Spectacle and the Medieval City are scholars of international prominence. Through their diverse interests, but single focus, the fundamental mobility of medieval culture is acknowledged. The collective aim in honouring Alan Hindley and his ongoing work is to produce a set of variations which offer diversity yet coherence. Performance and spectacle played a central role not only in the realm of urban entertainment, but also adopted enormously important civic and religious functions. The cities in the medieval west were both a hotbed of cultural manifestations, and elemental in the development of drama. In its refusal to accept subjective boundaries and its broad assumption that drama takes many forms, it is hoped that Performance, Drama, Spectacle and the Medieval City will find favour with its dedicatee, and imitate his wisdom and openness by enabling dialogue between traditions, critical approaches, and moments in time.
