Abstract

Après l'écrasement de la Commune de Paris, les années 1880 marquent en France la renaissance des mouvements socialistes, l'enracinement de la République et les premières lois visant à laïciser la vie publique. Ce processus fondateur, qui aboutira en 1905 à l'unité socialiste (SFIO) et à la loi sur la séparation des Églises et de l'État, est bien incarné en Indre-et-Loire par l'ouvrier libre penseur Sigismond Losserand, conseiller communal de Tours et animateur du groupe socialiste La Sentinelle. Il fait partie de la première cohorte des élus ouvriers en France. Le groupe La Sentinelle représente le courant « possibiliste » du socialisme français, un mouvement à l'image de la Touraine, où dominent encore les activités artisanales dispersées, proches du monde rural. Ce courant, voisin du radicalisme, est profondément anticlérical et défenseur ardent de la République sociale. À travers l'action municipale et l'engagement politique de Losserand, l'ouvrage propose un véritable panorama des services publics locaux en cours de laïcisation et accorde une large place aux difficultés sociales, autant de sujets qui ne cessent de faire polémique dans la presse locale comme dans les séances municipales. L'activité de Losserand s'inscrit aussi dans la diversité des débats républicains, dont les acteurs se rattachent à différentes traditions, comme les loges maçonniques.

Abstract

The Cosmographia is one of the most inventive and enigmatic works of medieval literature. Mark Kauntze argues that this allegory of creation is best understood as a product of the vibrant intellectual culture of twelfth-century France. Bernard Silvestris established the authority of his treatise by imitating those ancient philosophers and poets who were assiduously studied in the contemporary schools. But he also revised and updated them, to develop a compelling intervention into twelfth-century debates about man's place in nature and the relationship between theology and natural science. Using a wealth of manuscript evidence, Kauntze reconstructs the school context in which Bernard worked, and shows how the Cosmographia itself became an object of scholarly annotation and imitation in the later Middle Ages.

Abstract

Sharon Farmer here investigates the ways in which three medieval communities-the town of Tours, the basilica of Saint-Martin there, and the abbey of Marmoutier nearby-all defined themselves through the cult of Saint Martin. She demonstrates how in the early Middle Ages the bishops of Tours used the cult of Martin, their fourthcentury predecessor, to shape an idealized image of Tours as Martin's town. As the heirs to Martin's see, the bishops projected themselves as the rightful leaders of the community. However, in the late eleventh century, she shows, the canons of Saint-Martin (where the saint's relics resided) and the monks of Marmoutier (which Martin had founded) took control of the cult and produced new legends and rituals to strengthen their corporate interests. Since the basilica and the abbey differed in their spiritualities, structures, and external ties, the canons and monks elaborated and manipulated Martin's cult in quite different ways. Farmer shows how one saint's cult lent itself to these varying uses, and analyzes the strikingly dissimilar Martins that emerged. Her skillful inquiry into the relationship between group identity and cultural expression illuminates the degree to which culture is contested territory. Farmer's rich blend of social history and hagiography will appeal to a wide range of medievalists, cultural anthropologists, religious historians, and urban historians.
