Abstract

Catalogue of the exhibition "The Holy Family as Prototype of the Civilization of Love: Images from the Viceregal Americas," (Saint Joseph's University, Spring 1996) which commemorated the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the Feast of the Holy Family to the liturgical calendar of the Universal Church. The exhibition displayed paintings from the Spanish Colonial period, rare books and engravings from 17th- and 18th-century Europe, and lithographs and devotional paintings on tin from 19th-century Mexico and New Mexico. Culled from private collections, galleries in New York and Miami, and institutional collections of several Catholic universities, these art works offered a visual chronicle of the evolution of devotion to the Holy Family. This volume contains essays on the historical development of the Holy Family devotion from the late Middle Ages to the late 20th century, the subject of the Holy Family in Western art, and the encounter of European and Inca cultures observable in images of the Holy Family in Andean Viceregal art. Abstract

This, the first book-length study devoted exclusively to Marx’s perspectives on gender and the family, offers a fresh look at this topic in light of twenty-first century concerns. Although Marx’s writings sometimes exhibit sexism, especially through the naturalization of certain female social functions, his work often transcends these. Brown studies those writings on gender, as well as his 1879-1882 notebooks on precapitalist societies and gender, some of them still unpublished in any language. The author argues that although Marx never fully developed these ideas, he gave important indications toward a theory of gender and society. This study attempts to fill a significant gap in the literature on Marx and offer some general insights into the intersectionality of gender and class.

Abstract

During the first two centuries CE there was a common awareness that familial tensions were generated by conversions to the Christian faith. Yet studies of Christian origins have so far paid little attention to the impact of the Christian movement upon attitudes to family ties and natural kinship. Stephen C. Barton remedies this deficiency by means of a detailed study of the relevant passages in the gospels of Mark and Matthew. First, however, he examines the religious traditions of Judaism and the philosophical traditions of the Greco-Roman world, and shows that the tensions apparent within the Christian movement were by no means unique. In all three areas of thought and religious belief there is found the conviction that familial obligations may be transcended by some higher responsibility, to God, to Christ, or to the demands of philosophy. Mark and Matthew saw the Jesus-movement as offering a transcendent allegiance, which relativised family ties.
