In contrast to most psychological research about occupational interests and related achievement, which has centered on professional and managerial occupations, the study reported here deals with the vocational interests of skilled trades workers. The study is important because, among young people not planning to go to college, many each year select occupations when they have only fragmentary information about the occupation and its requirements and about their own characteristics and needs; the findings of this study will contribute to better counseling of such young people in the future. Dr. Clark's investigation is based on the responses of approximately 25,000 persons to the Minnesota Vocational Interest Inventory. About 6,000 of the subjects were civilians and the rest were enlisted personnel in the U.S. Navy. He describes the development of the Minnesota Vocational Interest Inventory and of scoring keys for use with it, examines the characteristics of these keys, and summarizes various studies of the psychometric characteristics of keys developed by different methods. He discusses use of keys in classifying individuals into occupational groups, then turns to the use of interest measures in predicting achievement and choice of specialty. In conclusion he suggests ways in which improved interest measures may be developed to the end that there may be not only better counseling of individuals but also greater understanding of the processes by which occupational choices occur. Vocational counselors, industrial psychologists, personnel managers, and psychometrists will find the book especially useful.

"During 1933-1934, the author [M.I. Wightwick, "The Function of Interest in Educational and Vocational Guidance" (unpublished Master's thesis, Columbia University, New York, 1934)], using the interview method for the most part, made an investigation of the vocational interests of college women, the persistence of these interests, and their relation to extra-curricular activities. The facts in which the interviewer was interested were: Reason for coming to college; Reason for choice of major; Occupational choice; Time of making choice; Factors influencing choice; Opportunities in community for summer work in chosen field; and Extra-curricular activities in high school and college. The participating group consisted of 173 freshman members of the class of 1937. The present research is a developmental study of the vocational interests of these same students. It has involved: 1. Obtaining an account of the trends in vocational and avocational interests of the individuals whose statements of vocational interests were ascertained eight years ago; 2. Obtaining data about the intelligence, achievement, vocational and avocational experiences, and the satisfactions of these individuals; 3. Studying the relationships among the preceding factors; 4. Studying the reasons for any change in the statement of vocational interest and any discrepancies between that interest and the jobs actually obtained; 5. Studying the validity of the Strong Vocational Interest Blank for Women in terms of the student's subsequent vocational and avocational interest history. This study sought answers to the following questions: 1. What is the permanence and the predictive value of expressed vocational choice? 2. What is the permanence and the predictive value of measured interest? 3. What is the relation between vocational interest and job satisfaction? 4. What part do avocational interests play in the individual pattern? 5. What vocational patterns are found among the individuals studied? 6. What individual deviations in vocational patterns occur?"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).
