Abstract

Abstract

Granice predratnog i ratnog kotara Podravska Slatina i posleratne općine Podravska Slatina nisu u potpunosti podudarne. Abstract

The beginning of the Communist dictatorship in 1948 was one of the most important milestones in the history of Slovak historiography. We can justifiably speak of the new formation of Slovak historical science from the organisational, personnel and thematic points of views, even though the full consequences of the introduction of Marxism-Leninism in historical research were only fully noticeable from the 1950s onwards. Before 1948, Marxist historiography in Slovakia hardly existed at all and even after the Communist coup, it took a long time for the Marxist historical school of though to even begin to produce relevant works. This turning point in Slovak historiography, however, was not as complete in any direction as the official Communist propaganda declared. When analysing the institutional base of Slovak historical science, we must in the first instance record the setting up of the Historical Institute of the SAV (up to 1953 called SAVU) as the leading establishment for historical research. The institute, as the top institution, replaced the Historical Seminar of Comenius University, which fulfilled this function in the period of the First Republic, and the Historical Section of Matica slovenská which held an important position during the Slovak State. At this time, the centres of research in historical science came under the strict control of state and party institutions. The system of historical research during this period stabilised itself as a relatively operative model, but one not accepted without reservations. From 1948, a mixture of rational decision-making and demonstrations of class hatred ruled the human resources policy of institutions concerning themselves with history. The Communist regime began the larger-scale screening of historians at the beginning of the 1950s. However, it could not afford mass redundancy, since there was no one with whom to replace the “unsuitable” employees. In this way, the purges only affected a small number of historians, and only for a certain time. In general, state power did not hinder their research work, even in the case of screening reservations, on condition that the historians displayed loyalty to the regime and its ideology in their work. In the interpretation of national history, no deviations from the prevailing Marxist dogmas of the time were allowed. After 1948, a new, Marxist, master narrative began to be created. Its old, non-Marxist concepts were labelled as unusable, not taking into account Marxist notions of historical development. In Slovakia, Marxism-Leninism was installed in historiography in its most vulgar, Stalinist form by Communist ideologists who also set up the basic shape of the new, master narrative. In this way, historical science in the 1950s only participated in the creation of the national story by developing and confirming the lines defined by the party central office and by filling in the schemes given in advance. Historical research directly driven by ideology thus produced more or less trustworthy theories that in the end led to a distortion of history, and often the devaluing of new knowledge, too. The disintegration of Stalinist dogmatism in the second half of the 1960s brought with it a partial revision of these theories. At this time, the most problematic distortions in the Slovak master narrative were revised. Even though the Marxist base of historical science was respected, historians often inclined towards older, non-Marxist versions of the national story. In conclusion, we can state that the characteristic sign of Slovak historiography since its beginning was (sometimes more or less visible) the attempt to create an independent Slovak national story which would not merge with, and would not be part of, the Hungarian or Czech master narratives. However, this process was not totally completed even during the 1948-1967 period.

Abstract

Relations and analogies of historical, social and cultural nature between the Poles and Slovaks in the past were intense and reflected in various spheres of our life. Slovak-Polish relations in the 20th century were and still are in the shadow of Polish-Czech relations. Moreover, it could be said that a considerable part of Polish society perceived Czechoslovakia mostly as a Czech state and that its perception of the Slovaks and Slovakia was dominated by this view. a similar optic, although to a lesser extent, is symptomatic for a part of Polish historiography dealing with Polish-Czechoslovak relations. Last but not least, the mainstream of Czech historical production dedicated to the Czechoslovak-Polish relations reflected the Slovak aspect rather marginally. These circumstances result to a great extent from the constitutional model of the centralized Czechoslovak state (Czechoslovak Republic and, after 1960, the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic – ČSSR), although the mentioned Polish perception of Czechoslovakia as a Czech state plays a certain role too. In historiography, this fact is reflected by a relative small number of research works devoted to the Slovak-Polish questions, nay – it affects the degree of knowledge about Slovak-Polish relations in the yesteryear and the way, how the Slovaks and Poles perceive each other. The presented publication titled Neighborhood in the Period of Crucial Changes is dealing with selected aspects of Czechoslovak-Polish relations during 1943 – 1948. Its ambition is to mention some of the specific questions of Slovak-Polish relations in the 1940’s. Although the considerations of the authors of particular articles in this book surveying the period starting with the final phase of the Second World War until 1948 are based on the Czechoslovak context, they are primarily focusing Slovak historical aspects and Slovak-Polish issues in this period. Both the macroand micro-levels of these relations are reflected, such as the Polish-Czech-Slovak political relations in the exile in the final stage of World War 2, the international background and the attitude of the Great Powers towards Czechoslovakia and Poland, further the bilateral relations between both countries immediately after WW2, and finally – the situation in the Czechoslovak-Polish, or more accurately, the Slovak-Polish border regions. Dušan Segeš is focusing on the final period (1943 – 1945) of official diplomatic relations between the Czechoslovak and the Polish government in exile residing in London. These relations were interrupted in January 1945, after the decision taken by Czechoslovak authorities in exile to recognize the Polish Committee of National Liberation headed by the communists and close collaborationists of Stalin’s Soviet Union. Segeš is presenting the details of the diplomatic faux pas caused by the Czechoslovak Ambassador in Moscow Zdeněk Fielinger in 1944, and further, among other Czechoslovak-Polish issues, a unique document written by President Edvard Beneš in April 1944, which is his personal account of the CzechoslovakPolish political relations in the exile. Slavomír Michálek’s study is dealing with the Czechoslovak foreign policy in the immediate after-war period (1945 – 1947), taking into consideration the possibilities of its orientation and the international context and reality of that time. The author is paying attention to the Czechoslovak project of “bridge building” between the East and the West (with the President Edvard Beneš and Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk as its major advocates), giving special examples such as the European Recovery Program (the so-called MarshallPlan) where this Czechoslovak strategy was put through the mill and, in the long run, failed. František Cséfalvay is reflecting the activities of home-resistance and partisan groups operating in the Slovak-Polish border regions in 1944, mostly on the Slovak side of this border. Jan Štaigl deals with the specifics of security situation in the northern region Orava as a consequence of re-allocating of some of the parts of it to the Polish authority. The author is taking into account the development within both the regions incorporated to Poland and the Slovak parts of Orava and Spiš, from the entry of the Red Army to these territories up to the year 1947. This year meant a breakthrough in the bilateral relations between Czechoslovakia and Poland due to the signing of Czechoslovak-Polish treaty on friendship, cooperation and solidarity. Štaigl mainly reflects the activities in the Polish-Slovak border zone of the Polish military group “Błyskawica”, headed by Józef Kuraś “Ogień”. The members of this military formation were involved in persecutions of Slovaks living in Poland after WW2; moreover, they were organized robberies of Slovak villages in Czechoslovakia. Štaigl is focusing on the actions taken by the Czechoslovak Army and Slovak armed forces against the troops of “Ogień” and their cooperation with Polish security forces in order to liquidate these troops. Matej Andráš is paying attention to chosen aspects of the Czechoslovak-Polish relations during 1945 – 1948, in particular focusing on territorial changes alongside the Czechoslovak-/ Slovak-Polish border and the situation of Slovak inhabitants of Upper Orava and the Northern Spiš living in Poland after the Second World War. Andráš’s description of this topic is based on research of materials from historical and diplomatic archives, using also data from his own personal archive that was collected during his active diplomatic career in the Czechoslovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Abstract

Přechody státních hranic a působení kurýrů a převaděčů po únoru 1948 patří v posledních letech bezesporu k nejfrekventovanějším tématům z dějin protikomunistického odboje a odporu.

Abstract

Često ju smatramo dosadnom i nepotrebnom. Međutim, dođe vrijeme kada si počnemo postavljati važna pitanja o kojima odgovore tražimo upravo u osobnim rukopisima i stranicama ispisanima povijesnim podacima koje nam mogu pomoći razumjeti uzroke sukoba, ratova i stalnih kršenja ljudskih prava. Kako mladi mogu postati nositelji pozitivnih promjena, poruka solidarnosti i kulture mira? U pogledu na prošlost važnim ističemo suočavanje s istom, s bolnim posljedicama sukoba i ratova, s mnogobrojnim stradanjima nedužnih – djece, mladih, žena, staraca, muškaraca... Uz tu odgovornost, važna je i ona kako ćemo pričati povijesne priče i govoriti o prošlim zbivanjima, kako ćemo prenositi iskustva naših predaka.

Abstract

For all of its apparent simplicity—a few chords, twelve bars, and a supposedly straightforward American character—blues music is a complex phenomenon with cultural significance that has varied greatly across different historical contexts. One Sound, Two Worlds examines the development of the blues in East and West Germany, demonstrating the multiple ways social and political conditions can shape the meaning of music. Based on new archival research and conversations with key figures, this comparative study provides a cultural, historical, and musicological account of the blues and the impact of the genre not only in the two Germanys, but also in debates about the history of globalization.

Abstract

The Second World War forced a substantial part of the Polish nationals to leave their own country. The migration of the majority of Poles was forcible, resulting from various forms of deportations staged by the German and Soviet occupying forces. The wandering was also experienced by the Polish military, fighting in the ranks of the units being assembled in foreign lands since the beginning of the War, as well as by the POWs and internees in the neutral countries. The Polish nationals were conscripted into both the German and Soviet invadersʼ armies too. Finally, Poland was left by the civilian refugees, mostly comprised of the representatives of the political, social and economic elites and the administrative apparatus of the state, as well as by the refugees of Jewish descent.
