Georg Forster (1754-1794) was famous during his lifetime, notorious after his death, and largely forgotten by the later nineteenth century. Remembered today as the young man who sailed around the world with Captain Cook and as one of the leading figures in the revolutionary Republic of Mainz, Forster was also a prolific writer and translator who left behind two travelogues, a series of essays on diverse topics, and numerous letters. This in-depth look at Forster's work and life reveals his importance for other writers of the age. Todd Kontje traces the major intellectual themes and challenges found in Forster's writings, interweaving close textual analysis with his rich but short life. Each chapter engages with themes that reflect the current debates in eighteenth-century literary and cultural studies, including changing notions of authorship, multilingualism, the representation of so-called primitive societies, Enlightenment ideas about race, and early forms of ecological thinking. As Kontje shows, Forster's peripatetic life, malleable sense of national identity, and fluency in multiple languages contrast with the image of the solitary genius in the "age of Goethe." In this way, Forster provides a different model of authorship and citizenship better understood in the context of an increasingly globalized world.Compellingly argued and engagingly written, this book restores Forster to his rightful place within the German literary tradition, and in so doing, it urges us to reconsider the age of Goethe as multilingual and malleable, local and cosmopolitan, dynamic and decentered. Die literaturwissenschaftlichen Epochenkonstruktionen Aufklärung und Weimarer Klassik sind in der jüngeren Forschung problematisch geworden. Tatsächlich lässt der literarische Diskurs selbst Phänomene der Gleichzeitigkeit erkennen, die die idealtypische Konfiguration heterogener Epochenstrukturen fragwürdig erscheinen lassen. Dem Generalthema der Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten im literarischen Feld zwischen 1750 und 1800 widmete sich im Sommer 2006 eine am Interdisziplinären Zentrum für die Erforschung der Europäischen Aufklärung in Halle/Saale veranstaltete literaturwissenschaftliche Tagung. Im Zugriff auf Texte u.a. von Lessing, Wieland, Herder, Schiller, Goethe und Moritz problematisieren die Beiträge, wie Denkmuster der Aufklärung im Medium der Literatur sowie des theoretischen Diskurses (Ästhetik) entfaltet und im historischen Konstellationsrahmen der Weimarer Klassik affirmativ aufgenommen, polemisch revidiert und konstruktiv weitergeführt werden. Der diskursive Dialog zwischen Aufklärung und Weimarer Klassik gewinnt seine epochenübergreifende Brisanz sowohl durch das programmatische Innovationsbestreben der Klassiker, als auch durch das vielfältig variierte Anschlussbedürfnis der einzelnen Autoren an die Erfolgsepoche Aufklärung.

In Germany, Weimar Classicism (roughly the period from Goethe's return to Germany from Italy in 1788 to the death of his friend and collaborator Schiller in 1805) is widely regarded as an apogee of literary art. But outside of Germany, Goethe is considered a Romantic, and the notion of Weimar Classicism as a distinct period is viewed with skepticism. This volume of new essays regards the question of literary period as a red herring: Weimar Classicism is best understood as a project that involved the ambitious attempt not only to imagine but also to achieve a new quality of wholeness in human life and culture at a time when fragmentation, division, and alienation appeared to be the norm. By not succumbing to the myth of Weimar and its literary giants, but being willing to explore the phenomenon as a complex cultural system with a unique signature, this book provides an account of its shaping beliefs, preoccupations, motifs, and values. Contributions from leading German, British, and North American scholars open up multiple interdisciplinary perspectives on the period. Essays on the novel, poetry, drama, and theater are joined by accounts of politics, philosophy, visual culture, women writers, and science. The reader is introduced to the full panoply of cultural life in Weimar, its accomplishments as well as its excesses and follies. Emancipatory and doctrinaire by turns, the project of Weimar Classicism is best approached as a complex whole.
