Dit boek is een verdere uitdieping van het in 2006 door Monica Rotgans gepubliceerde 'Verf : 500.000 jaar verf en schilderkunst'. Het uitgangspunt is dat verf, het basismateriaal van de kunstenaar, te stiefmoederlijk wordt behandeld door kunsthistorici. In dit werk richt de auteur nu specifiek de focus op de kleuren blauw en groen. Van beide kleuren bespreekt ze de mondiale symbolische functie vanaf de prehistorie tot de moderne kunst en dit in verschillende kunstdisciplines, met nadruk op de schilderkunst. De verschillende pigmenten zelf worden gedetailleerd behandeld, onderverdeeld in drie groepen: de klassieke plantaardige natuurlijke organische kleurstoffen en pigmenten, de klassieke natuurlijke anorganische en tot slot de klassieke synthetische anorganische pigmenten. De auteur hecht veel belang aan het feit dat pigmenten in de loop van de tijd kunnen veranderen. Het effect op het uitzicht van een schilderij illustreert ze met heel frappante voorbeelden. Zeer mooi vormgegeven en origineel kunstboek met prachtige kleurenillustraties. Met register. Dit boek vormt het eerste deel van soortgelijke toekomstige uitgaven over de kleuren Rood/Geel/Aarde en Zwart/Wit.
