This catalogue of the largest collection of ancient cameos in private hands, represents forty years of collecting these historical documents in hardstone. While part of the collection was on public display at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (1990-2000), the whole collection has never been shown. Several recent publications have made it possible to draw more precise conclusions based on a larger sample of cameos available for comparative study. This increased number of published cameos has allowed studies of the popularity of particular subjects at certain periods, of the development of styles and techniques, and of the relative popularity of some gem materials over time. The development of digital photography has enabled gem photographers to show undreamt-of detail, allowing much closer study of tool marks and even individual artists' hands

Die Sammlung umfasst rund 1500 Glaspasten des 18. bis frühen 19. Jahrhunderts. Ein erster Teil mit 946 Glaspasten von antiken Gemmen aus dem 6. Jh. v. bis 5. Jh. n. Chr. und von solchen nachantiken Gemmen des 15. bis 18. Jahrhunderts, die in unmittelbarem Zusammenhang mit ihnen stehen, wird hier vorgelegt.Glaspasten wurden als edelste Form von Gemmenabdrücken, als getreue Repliken der Originale in einem verwandten Material, geschätzt. Als Hersteller des Hauptbestandes der Sammlung wird Philipp Daniel Lippert ermittelt, der bisher nur als Verfertiger von preiswerteren Daktyliotheken in Talkmasse bekannt war.Inhaltlich umfasst sie alle Bereiche der antiken Kultur. Schwerpunkte liegen bei Porträts und Gemmen mit Meistersignaturen. Viele der Originale sind heute verschollen, wodurch die Glaspasten zu Primärquellen werden. Andere Originale mit bekanntem Aufbewahrungsort werden erstmals der Forschung erschlossen. Weit verstreute Originale, antike und antikisierende Gemmenbilder lassen sich unmittelbar miteinander vergleichen. Glaspasten, Repliken von Gemmen in Glas, waren aufwendig in der Herstellung, seltener und teurer als z.B. Gips-Abgüsse in Daktyliotheken des 18. Jahrhunderts. Hersteller der Würzburger Glaspasten war Philipp Daniel Lippert (1702–1785), der die erste systematisch geordnete, von Verzeichnissen begleitete Daktyliothek herausbrachte. Die Sammlung ist die früheste dieser Art. Band 2 der Würzburger Glaspasten enthält vorwiegend Abdrücke von Kameen und Intaglien des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts mit antiken Motiven, deren Originale meist verschollen sind. Im 18. Jahrhundert hielt man die meisten für antik. Erfasst wird hier der Beginn der wissenschaftlichen Gemmen-Forschung, als deren Vorreiter sich J. F. Christ (1700–1756) erweist. Anhang I: Lipperts Bücher. The manufacturer of the Würzburg pastes was Philipp Daniel Lippert (1702–1785), who also published the first systematically arranged gemstone library with accompanying indexes. The collection is the earliest of its kind. Volume 2 of the Würzburg Pastes contains mainly impressions of 16th and 17th century cameos and intaglios with antique motifs, whereby most of the originals have been lost. Star Turns and Cameo Appearances is the entertaining and insightful memoir by veteran music critic Bernard Jacobson. Its pages are populated by eminent composers ranging from Hans Werner Henze to Andrzej Panufnik and by renowned performers, including Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, Sviatoslav Richter, and Jessye Norman.
As a music critic and orchestra administrator, Jacobson has had the opportunity to observe these outstanding musicians and many of their colleagues at close quarters. Assisting Riccardo Muti at the Philadelphia Orchestra for eight years, he saw sides of that maestro not visible to the music-loving public. Bernard Jacobson has worked in the music field for over fifty years, including stints as recording executive, music critic of the Chicago Daily News, artistic director and adviser for international orchestras in Holland, and visiting professor at Roosevelt University's Chicago Musical College. He has also performed and recorded as narrator of concert works and opera.
