Agrippa d'Aubigné ist ein vormoderner Autor der Moderne: Die erste Neuausgabe der Tragi-ques erschien 1857, im selben Jahr wie Madame Bovary und die Fleurs du mal. Baudelaire ließ das Titelblatt seines Gedichtbandes sogar mit Versen aus dem barocken Religionskriegsepos zieren. Das damalige wie heutige Leser irritierende Merkmal nicht nur der Tragiques, sondern fast aller Tex-te Aubignés ist die provokative und aufwändige Zuspitzung des Konfessionskonflikts auf den end-zeitlichen Kampf zwischen 'rechtgläubigen', reformierten Christen und 'widerchristlichen', römischen Katholiken. Der Arbeit liegt die These zugrunde, dass es zwischen der apokalyptischen Struktur des Werks und seiner au-to(bio)graphischen Durchdringung eine Interdependenz gibt. Der inszenierte Einbruch des gött-lichen Gerichts wird zu einem Akt poetischer Identitätsstiftung.

The Salvation of Israel investigates Christianity's eschatological Jew: the role and characteristics of the Jews at the end of days in the Christian imagination. It explores the depth of Christian ambivalence regarding these Jews, from Paul's Epistle to the Romans, through late antiquity and the Middle Ages, to the Puritans of the 17th century. Jeremy Cohen contends that few aspects of a religion shed as much light on the character and the self-understanding of its adherents as its expectations for the end of time. Moreover, eschatological beliefs express and mold an outlook toward nonbelievers, situating them in an overall scheme of human history and conditioning interaction with them as that history unfolds. Cohen's close readings of biblical commentary, theological texts, and Christian iconography reveal the dual role of the Jews of the last days.

L’autel, le Temple, le Sang, l’Agneau : les perspectives eschatologiques du sacrement de l’eucharistie déploient les images phares de l’Apocalypse de Jean. Gonzalo de Berceo fait œuvre spirituelle plutôt que doctrinale dans ces deux poèmes, moins réputés que les vies de Saints ou que l’œuvre mariale de cet auteur, qui écrivait à San Millán de la Cogolla vers le milieu du XIIIe siècle. Pourtant, face aux Miracles de notre Dame, ici, la présence rédemptrice du Christ, dans le sacrement ainsi que dans l’évocation des temps derniers, ne manque pas de force. Le rituel de la messe est une prière de rédemption pour la « famille » monastique. Miracles et sacrements ont en commun de montrer dans le monde terrestre l’intervention du divin. Mais contrairement aux miracles, où Dieu manifeste sa puissance, la déléguant souvent à Marie et à ses saints, dans le sacrement de l’eucharistie, il se donne mystérieusement et pleinement dans sa divinité. Le mystère de la transsubstantiation réalise l’avènement du Christ parmi les hommes quand la messe est célébrée ; cette révélation est également portée par la vision initiatique de Jean (Αποκάλυψις Ιησού Χριστού, « la révélation de Jésus-Christ »), référence explicite, à travers Saint Jérôme, des Signes qui apparaîtront avant le Jugement dernier.
