Abstract

Secure Oil and Alternative Energy: The Geopolitics and Energy Paths of China and the European Union is the follow-on study to the well-received The Globalization of Energy: China and the European Union (Brill 2010). While intensive cooperation between China and the EU in the fields of energy use, environmental protection, and sustainability is highly needed, the question remains unanswered how this cooperation could be organized. Since the proven gas and oil reserves lay outside China and the EU, they are both facing geopolitical challenges to energy security in the foreseeable future. This volume puts the geopolitical implementation of China’s and the EU’s energy security into the context of (a) geo-economic systems in a global scale including the Central Eurasian, the Middle East and Africa hydrocarbon energy complex and (b) the emergence of a geo-economic energy network spreading from China to Western Europe. The edited volume consists of 14 high-quality papers on topics announced in the title of the volume: the geo-politics of energy-supply security, alternative sources of energy, energy transition and, at the global level, energy governance. Abstract

Renewable energy represents a game changer for interstate energy relations. The abundant and intermittent nature of sources, possibilities for decentral generation and use of rare earth materials, and generally electric nature of distribution make renewable energy systems very different from those of fossil fuels. What do these geographic and technical characteristics imply for infrastructure topology and operations, business models, and energy markets? What are the consequences for strategic realities and policy considerations of producer, consumer, and transit countries and energy-related patterns of cooperation and conflict between them? Who are the likely winners and losers? The Geopolitics of Renewables is the first in-depth exploration of the implications for interstate energy relations of a transition towards renewable energy. Het is een groene illusie dat we de energietransitie kunnen realiseren op de manier zoals we dat nu doen. Maar we hebben ook een groene kans.Laten we stoppen met wachten op politici, ondernemers en wetenschappers. Laten we stoppen met het verkopen van de klimaatdoelstellingen aan energiegiganten en grootindustriëlen. De groene kans ligt niet in technologie en infrastructuur, maar in bewustwording en ander gedrag van ons allemaal. Abstract

Les nouvelles sources d’énergie renouvelables et les nouvelles règles de droit qui les accompagnent, bouleversent le monde de demain. Ces différents éléments d’évolution font que l’autoconsommation individuelle et collective a de l’avenir devant elle. De plus, la « flexibilité » tant de la production que de la consommation, sont au coeur de la nouvelle stratégie européenne.La montée de l’hydrogène, comme vecteur de transport ou de stockage d’énergie, et également promue par les nouveaux textes européens. L’hydrogène vert sera sans doute un des éléments clef de la décarbonisation de notre société.Le renouveau des réseaux de chaleur est également perceptible. Mis à l’arrière-plan pendant des années, les réseaux de chaleur et la géothermie sont appelés à connaitre un rebond. Les réseaux de chaleur vont accroitre l’efficacité énergétique et vont contribuer au développement de la géothermie, spécialement profonde.Le financement (notamment via les mesures de soutien et le CRM) et le développement de ces différentes filières est présenté dans le livre.
