Everyday life is a growing field of study in cultural studies and cultural theory. 'Reading the Everyday' fleshes out some of the key debates in this field with detailed readings of the spaces, practices and mythologies of quotidian culture. Drawing on the work of continental theorists such as Henri Lefebvre, Michel de Certeau, Marc Auge; and Siegfried Kracauer, it explores the concrete sites and routines of everyday life, and their representation in political discourse, news media, material culture, sitcoms, reality TV shows, photography, CCTV and webcams. It aims to rethink notions of everyday life within cultural studies, which have traditionally focused on questions of popular culture, consumption and lifestyle. 'Reading the Everyday' instead investigates some of the most under-explored, banal aspects of quotidian culture, such as office life, commuting, traffic, parking, motorways and mass housing.

Histories of voice are often written as accounts of greatness: great statesmen, notable rebels, grands discours, and famous exceptional speakers and singers populate our shelves. This focus on the great and exceptional has not only led to disproportionate attention to a small subset of historical actors (powerful, white, western men and the occasional token woman), but also obscures the broad range of vocal practices that have informed, co-created and given meaning to human lives and interactions in the past. For most historical actors, life did not consist of grand public speeches, but of private conversations, intimate whispers, hot gossip or interminable quarrels. This volume suggests an extended practice of eavesdropping: rather than listening out for exceptional voices, it listens in on the more mundane aspects of vocality, including speech and song, but also less formalized shouts, hisses, noises and silences. Ranging from the Scottish highlands to China, from the bedroom to the platform, and from the 18th until the 20th century, contributions to this volume seek out spaces and moments that have been documented idiosyncratically or with difficulty, and where the voice and its sounds can be of particular salience. In doing so, the volume argues for a heightened attention to who speaks, and whose voices resound in history, but refuses to take the modern equation between speech and presence/representation for granted.

Der Band versammelt erstmals Beiträge zu Aspekten der Freizeit- und Konsumgeschichte der schlesischen Metropole Breslau im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Wie und wo verbrachten die Bewohner der Stadt ihre freie Zeit, wo betätigten sie sich sportlich, wo kauften sie ein, welche kulturellen Angebote nutzten sie? Diesen und weiteren Fragen geht der Band mit seinem interdisziplinären kulturhistorischen Zugriff nach. Die Einzelbeiträge wurden auf der Grundlage einer breiten und vielfältigen Quellengrundlage erstellt. Zahlreiche, zum Teil hier erstmals präsentierte Illustrationen vervollständigen visuell den Einblick in das Freizeit- und Konsumverhalten der Breslauer. For the first time, this volume compiles essays on aspects of the 19th and 20th century history of leisure and consumption in the Silesian metropolis Breslau. How and where did the inhabitants of Breslau spend their leisure time, what athletic activities did they pursue, where did they shop, what cultural offerings did they enjoy? These questions, among others, are the focus of this volume, which uses an interdisciplinary historical approach.

Practise in oral interview for recording experiences nurtured during Resistance was early as it was carried on firstly by Silvio Micheli. However, neither Micheli or the Historical Institutes for Resistance studies have been privileged military topics over the other ones. Resistance indeed did not resolve itself only on a military basis. Afterwards, historical research dealt with partisans' daily lives: it showed the human dimension of Resistance as well as difficulties met by partisans, who were politically immature as they were grown during Fascism. Among this new kind of research, the contribute will deal with historical witnesses such as Calegari and Bermani. The pair indeed was characterised by two different way of behaviour.
